Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Trap

The siren continued to blare, casting rhythmic red shadows across my father’s cold, triumphant face. Mark stepped forward, his eyes gleaming with malicious glee as he looked at Marcus, who was frozen with his hands near the laptop.

"Step away from the vault, Stern," Mark barked, pulling a compact pistol from his waistband. "You're out of your depth. You're just a glorified paper-pusher, and my sister is a broken widow."

"Let Marcus go," I said, stepping squarely in front of my friend, shielding him from Mark’s weapon. "He has nothing to do with this. I'm the one who broke into your vault. I'm the one who wants to see you ruinous, Father."

Arthur chuckled, a dry, rattling sound as he walked further into the study, tapping his cane against the polished hardwood floor. "Ruinous? My dear child, look around you. This empire was built on blood, sweat, and absolute control. Ethan thought he could disrupt the natural order of things because he understood numbers. But numbers don't buy loyalty. Fear does. Power does."

"You killed him," I spat, the words burning my throat. "You murdered the father of my children."

"Ethan murdered himself the moment he began poking around the port manifests," Arthur replied coldly. "He was warned. I warned him personally in this very room. I offered him a seat at the table. I offered to integrate his financial firm into our network. He chose to play the hero. And heroes end up in graves."

Arthur signaled to one of the guards, who stepped forward and roughly pulled Marcus away from the laptop, slamming him against the wall. Mark walked over to the vault, looking at the progress bar on Marcus’s screen.

"It's at eighty percent, Dad," Mark reported. "The complete decryption ledger. If this finishes, it automatically broadcasts to an encrypted cloud network."

"Then abort it," Arthur ordered.

"Wait," I called out, desperate to buy time. Marcus’s laptop was still running; the data was still transferring. "If you destroy that data link, you lose your only leverage with your international buyers. The man on the phone—the syndicate leader—he told me you failed them. He said you were sloppy. If you don't deliver the decryption key, they will eliminate you just like they did Ethan."

Arthur’s smirk faltered slightly. A flicker of genuine anxiety passed through his eyes before being instantly masked by rage. I had hit a nerve. My father wasn't the top of the food chain. He was just a well-paid middleman terrified of the monsters he served.

"You think you're clever, Clara," Arthur muttered, stepping closer to me, his cane raised threateningly. "You think you can play me against my investors? They don't care who delivers the key, as long as it's delivered. Once I have the complete ledger from Ethan’s trust files, I am indispensable to them. And you... you will be nothing but a tragic footnote. A grieving mother who suffered a mental breakdown and committed suicide, leaving her estate and her children to her loving father."

"I will never give you custody of my children," I whispered fiercely.

"You won't have a choice," my mother’s voice suddenly cut through the room. She walked in through the main doors, looking immaculate, her hair perfectly coiffed, showing no signs of her recent arrest. "The family court judge has already signed the temporary emergency custody order, effective tomorrow morning. We’ve cited your severe postpartum depression and your reckless, criminal behavior tonight as evidence that you are an unfit mother."

The trap was complete. They had orchestrated everything perfectly. The arrest in the hospital ward was a minor setback they had already spun to their advantage. They had lured me here tonight, knowing I would try to strike back, using my own desperation as the final nail in my legal coffin.

"Mark, shut down the broadcast protocol but save the decryption files," Arthur commanded, turning his back to me. "Then clear the room. We’ll call the police to report a home invasion. Let's see how the media covers the wealthy widow breaking into her father's home with an accomplice."

Mark reached for the laptop, his fingers hovering over the abort key.

"Mark, don't do it," Marcus shouted, struggling against the guard’s grip. "If you press that, you kill the broadcast, but you also activate the wipe command!"

Mark paused, frowning. "What wipe command?"

I looked at my father’s back, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm. "Ethan knew you would catch us, Father. He knew you would try to intercept the download."

Arthur spun around, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"

"The download isn't copying the data from your vault," I said, a wave of profound relief washing over me as I saw the laptop screen turn from blue to a bright, flashing white. "It was uploading a virus. The moment your vault door opened with your stolen fingerprint and your grandfather's code, it triggered a counter-protocol Ethan programmed months ago. It's called the 'Scorched Earth' script."

On the desk, the silver hard drive inside the vault began to whir violently, followed by the sharp, popping sound of electrical short-circuits. Smoke began to curl out of the server rack.

"No!" Mark shrieked, slamming his hands onto the keyboard.

"It's deleting everything, Dad!" Mark panicked. "The manifests, the banking routing numbers, the buyer lists... it's all wiping! It's erasing the entire Vance Logistics database globally!"

Arthur’s face drained of color, turning a ghostly, horrific white. The foundation of his entire empire, his leverage over the syndicate, his protection from the law—everything was evaporating in a cloud of burning silicone.

"You miserable little bitch!" Arthur roared, raising his cane to strike me.

But before the cane could fall, the glass skylight above the study shattered inward in a spectacular explosion of shards.
