Chapter 6 - The New Beginning

Three years later, the sun was shining on my backyard. It was a small, quiet yard, but it was mine.
I sat on the deck, watching Noah and Elijah chase a butterfly through the grass. They were strong, healthy, and happy. They didn't know about the cold kitchen floor or the locked door. They only knew the warmth of a home where they were cherished.
I heard the sliding glass door open. My partner, Mark, walked out, carrying two glasses of lemonade. He sat down beside me, his hand finding mine. Mark was everything Blake wasn't. He was kind, he was present, and he was the man who had helped me rebuild my confidence after the wreckage.
“Thinking about the past?” he asked softly.
I looked at my boys. I looked at the life I had saved.
“Sometimes,” I said. “But then I look at them, and I realize the pain wasn't a death sentence. It was a graduation.”
We had gone through the fire, but we had come out forged in steel. I had learned that the most dangerous thing a woman can do is stay in a house where her existence is considered an inconvenience.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over my children, I realized I didn't hate Diane or Blake anymore. Hatred required energy, and I had none to spare for them. They were small, greedy people living small, greedy lives.

I was living a masterpiece.
I took a sip of the lemonade and watched my sons. They were growing, they were thriving, and most importantly, they were safe. The nightmare was over, and for the first time in my life, the future didn't just feel promising—it felt earned.
