Chapter 3 - Decoding the Trap

"I didn't have a choice!" Leo yelled, the raw emotion finally bursting through his cold facade.
He took a step forward, but the sudden, sharp click of a pistol being cocked from the shadows near the doorway stopped him in his tracks.
Luca, Alessandro’s chief enforcer, stepped out of the darkness, his heavy caliber weapon pointed directly at Leo’s chest. His face was a mask of cold fury. He had watched Leo grow up; he had taught the boy how to shoot. The betrayal hit him almost as hard as it hit Alessandro.
"Everyone has a choice, Leo," Alessandro said softly. "You chose the Lombardi family."
"They have my wife, Alessandro!" Leo screamed, tears finally spilling over his amber eyes. He pointed a trembling finger at Clara. "They took Maria three months ago! They sent me a finger, Alessandro! A finger with her wedding ring still on it! They told me if I didn't give them the bypass codes to the harbor relays, they would send me her head next. And then they would come for Clara."
The library fell into a sudden, terrible silence.
The crackle of the fireplace sounded like bones snapping. Clara squeezed Alessandro’s pinky tighter, her small face buried in the fabric of his trousers.
Alessandro looked at Leo. The anger in his chest didn't vanish, but it was joined by a heavy, suffocating weight. "Why didn't you come to me?"
"Because they were watching!" Leo cried, collapsing onto his knees, his hands covering his face as he sobbed. "They had eyes inside the house, Alessandro! They told me if I even looked at you the wrong way, Maria would die. I had to build the backdoor. I had to make it look like a system glitch so your analysts wouldn't notice. But Clara... Clara is too smart. She saw the code on my laptop. She knew I was doing something bad, and she wanted to fix it."
Alessandro turned his gaze slowly toward Robert Langley.
The old adviser stood perfectly still. His expression had not changed, but his hand was resting inside his coat pocket.
"The eyes inside the house," Alessandro said, his voice deadly quiet. "The only person who had unlimited access to Leo’s terminal besides me. The only person who could have coordinated with the Lombardi family without triggering our internal alarms."
Robert let out a soft, dry laugh.
"You always were too sentimental, Alessandro," Robert said, pulling his hand out of his pocket. He was holding a small, black detonator. "Your father knew how to make difficult choices. But you? You let your heart guide your business. The Duca family is weak under your leadership. The Lombardis offered a partnership that would ensure our survival. I did what was necessary."
"You used Leo’s family as leverage," Alessandro hissed, his fingers tightening.
"It was highly effective," Robert replied, his thumb hovering over the red button on the detonator. "At 5:00 AM, the Brooklyn warehouse doesn't just go dark. It goes up in flames. Along with eighty million dollars of your primary inventory. And if you try to stop it, or if Luca fires that weapon, I press this button. The charges wired beneath this library will detonate, and we will all burn together."
Clara looked up at Alessandro, her amber eyes wide with fear.
"Uncle Sandro," she whispered, her tiny voice cutting through the tension. "The blue-green light. It’s still pulsing. We can turn it off."

Alessandro looked down at her. "What do you mean, Clara?"
"The node," she said, her voice filled with a child’s simple, unshakeable logic. "The one that doesn't answer back. It’s not just listening. It’s the wire. If we cut the wire, the button won't work."
