Chapter 6 - The Gold and the Grace

One Year Later
The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was bathed in a warm, golden glow, the crystal chandeliers catching the light like falling stars. It was the annual Chicago Benefactors Gala, the most exclusive social event of the year, and the room was filled with the city’s elite.
But tonight, no one was looking at the old-money heirs or the politicians.
All eyes were fixed on the central table.
Clarissa Robinson stood beside the grand ice sculpture, looking absolutely breathtaking in a custom-made, gold-sequined gown that hugged every magnificent curve of her body. Her dark skin glowed under the warm lights, her curls falling in a cascade of soft, perfect rings over her shoulders. She wore a diamond collar that had once belonged to a European royal family—a gift from the man who now ruled the city’s legitimate commercial sectors.
Following the forensic audit that Clarissa had completed, the corrupt federal agents had been exposed and arrested, and Thorne Logistics had been completely cleared of all allegations. Marcus had transitioned his entire empire into a fully legitimate, multi-billion-dollar global enterprise, with Clarissa serving as the Chief Financial Officer and equal partner.
Samantha Cole and her former friends were entirely gone, ruined by the legal fees of their families' crimes and barred from every respectable establishment in the state.
A pair of strong, familiar hands settled gently on Clarissa’s waist.
Marcus Thorne stepped up behind her, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. He leaned down, his lips brushing the warm skin of her shoulder, making her smile.
“You’re ignoring your guests, CFO,” Marcus murmured, his low, gravelly voice sending a familiar, delicious shiver down her spine.
“I’m just enjoying the view,” Clarissa said, turning in his arms to face him. She adjusted his black bow tie, her eyes shining with a deep, peaceful happiness. “A year ago tonight, I was sitting in a corner booth, wishing I could disappear.”
Marcus looked down at her, his hazel eyes filled with a fierce, unconditional adoration that made the rest of the crowded ballroom fade into insignificance. He reached down, his large hand capturing hers, their fingers locking together perfectly.
“A year ago, you walked into my corner and changed my life, Clarissa,” he whispered, his eyes dropping to her lips. “The world tried to tell you that you didn't belong in the light. But they forgot that the most beautiful things always grow in the deep.”

He leaned down, kissing her in front of the entire high society of Chicago—not for a dare, not for a show, but because she was his anchor, his queen, and the one person his enemies could never buy.
The music swelled, the gold light washed over them, and as Clarissa rested her head against his solid chest, she knew she was finally home.
