Chapter 3 - The Price of Treason

The Thorne estate in Lake Forest was a sprawling fortress of stone and iron, nestled behind high walls on the rugged bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. For two weeks, Clarissa lived in a world of absolute luxury and intense, midnight work sessions.
She quickly realized that Marcus Thorne was not the unfeeling monster the papers portrayed. He was a protector. He kept a quiet, watchful eye over the families of his fallen men, funded community centers on the South Side, and treated her with a fierce, unwavering respect that she had never experienced in her life.
Every evening, Marcus would join her in the library. He didn't pressure her; he simply sat in the armchair across from her desk, working silently, his eyes occasionally drifting to her with an intense, quiet admiration that made her chest ache with a sweet, unfamiliar warmth.
But the peace shattered on a rainy Thursday night.
Clarissa was deep into the clearinghouse transaction codes when she found the digital signature of the person who had approved the malicious routing transfers.
Her breath caught in her throat.
“Marcus,” she called out, her voice shaking.
He was beside her in an instant, his hand resting on her shoulder, his warmth instantly grounding her. “What is it, sweetheart?”
“The digital signature used to authorize the Delaware shell companies,” Clarissa said, pointing to the screen. “It’s registered to a private IP address belonging to Cole Logistics.”
Marcus’s eyes darkened into black pools of flint. “Samantha’s father.”
“Arthur Cole,” Clarissa whispered, the betrayal cutting deep. “My 'friend' Samantha… her family’s entire lifestyle is funded by your stolen money. And they are using my old employer’s network to route the transfers. Samantha didn't just dare me to kiss you at the club to humiliate me, Marcus. She knew her father was trying to frame you. She wanted to see if I was close enough to your operations to notice.”
Before Marcus could answer, the security monitors in the library began to flash a violent red.
The heavy oak doors of the library burst open, and Carter, Marcus’s lead bodyguard, stepped inside with his weapon drawn.
“Boss,” Carter said, his voice grim. “The perimeter gates just lost power. We have three vehicles entering the drive. They aren't ours.”
Marcus didn't hesitate. He reached down, his strong hands catching Clarissa by the waist and lifting her effortlessly from her chair. He pulled her behind his massive frame, his body acting as an impenetrable shield.
“Get her to the safe room, Carter,” Marcus ordered, his voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural growl as he drew a sleek, black automatic weapon from beneath his jacket. “And tell the team to take no prisoners. Arthur Cole wants a war? Let’s show him how the Thorne family negotiates.”
“Marcus, no!” Clarissa cried, her fingers clutching his arm.

He looked back at her, his hazel eyes burning with a fierce, protective love that took her breath away.
“They came for you, Clarissa,” he said softly, his hand cupping her face for one brief, desperate second. “Because they know you’re the only person in this city I cannot afford to lose. Now go. I will end this tonight.”
