Chapter 5 - The Dawn of Monday

At 7:55 a.m. on Monday morning, the atmosphere inside the bridal suite was thick with a heavy, electric tension. The grey fog had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, blindingly bright autumn sun that illuminated every corner of the room. Adrian stood in front of the vanity mirror, wearing the flawless silicone mask of Alden Vale once again. The gray hair, the synthetic age spots, the deep-set wrinkles around his eyes—the illusion was perfect. But the man beneath the rubber skin was vibrating with a lethal, focused energy.

I sat at the desk, the encrypted black tablet open in front of me. On the screen, a live, digital bridge connected Adrian’s private offshore holdings to the primary escrow account of Vance Construction Group.

"The automated transfer sequence is initialization," I whispered, my heart thumping against my ribs. "In exactly three minutes, ten million dollars will move from your account into theirs. The bank's internal fraud filters will register the deficit as resolved. The SEC audit will clear them for the quarter."

Adrian turned from the mirror, his movements slow and deliberate, adopting the frail, leaning posture of the old man. But his real voice cut through the mask like a razor. "And the secondary protocol?"

"The secondary protocol is locked and loaded," I said, showing him the split-screen on the tablet. "The moment their bank accepts the funds, the collateral contract is finalized in the state registry. Simultaneously, our mirrored copy of their fraudulent ledgers will be automatically distributed to the compliance officers at the New York Stock Exchange and the state’s attorney general. They will have forty-eight hours of pure financial bliss before the floor drops out from underneath them."

"Perfect," Adrian rasped through the synthetic throat-piece of the mask. "Let's watch them celebrate their own execution."

At exactly 8:00 a.m., the digital timer hit zero.

The progress bar flashed brilliant green: TRANSFER COMPLETE. $10,000,000.00 USD SETTLED.

Within sixty seconds, my personal phone began to ring. It was my father, Arthur Vance. It was the first time he had called me in over six months.

Adrian nodded slowly. I answered, clicking the speaker button.

"Evelyn!" Arthur’s booming, deep voice filled the room, roaring over the sound of a popping champagne cork in the background. "The money is in! The green light just cleared on our corporate dashboard! Tell Mr. Vale that Vance Construction honors its partners. We are fully solvent, the audit is a non-issue, and the downtown project is officially a go!"

"I’m glad to hear it, Father," I said, my voice deadpan, completely flat.

"You did well, girl," Arthur said, his tone dripping with the dismissive paternal praise he usually reserved for a well-behaved dog. "Your mother says you handled Marcus beautifully yesterday when he was stressed. We’re hosting a dinner at the estate tonight to celebrate the new partnership. Tell Mr. Vale he is expected at eight o'clock. We want to toast the man who saved the family."

"We will be there, Father," I said, looking up at Adrian, who was adjusting his leather gloves with a slow, terrifying precision. "Mr. Vale is very eager to see the estate. Especially the basement archives."

"Excellent! See you at eight!"

The line went dead.

Adrian walked over to the desk, leaning his gloved hands on the mahogany surface, looking down at the tablet where the second progress bar had just begun to run: BROADCASTING COMPLIANCE REPORT... 12% COMPLETE.

"They think they’ve won," Adrian said through the mask, a low, rumbling chuckle escaping his synthetic lips. "They think they’re standing on top of the world. Tonight, Evelyn... we walk into their house, and we take the keys to everything they own."
