Chapter 10 - The Fall of the First Domain

The morning after the raid, Maple Ridge woke up to a financial earthquake. The front page of every regional newspaper displayed the photo of Arthur Vance being led down his marble steps in handcuffs, his face purple, his corporate reputation entirely demolished. The headlines were brutal: “Billion-Dollar Construction Dynasty Exposed: Cross Family Heir Seizes Vance Infrastructure in Strategic Asset Sting.”
Adrian and I sat in the high-ceilinged boardroom of Cross Holdings—a sleek, modern skyscraper downtown that had once belonged to his father, which Adrian had quietly bought back through secondary shell companies over the past three years. The large mahogany table was covered in restructuring documents, corporate seals, and court-ordered transfer deeds.
"Every single asset registered to Vance Construction Group has been successfully liquidated into the Cross core pool," Clara Vance, our lead financial investigator, explained, sliding a sleek tablet toward us. "The state court approved the expedited transfer of the Maple Ridge waterfront development project this morning. Evelyn... the family trust your father set up to shield their personal wealth has been entirely dissolved under the federal anti-racketeering statutes. Your mother and Marcus are currently staying in a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city. Their corporate credit cards were cancelled at midnight."
I looked at the screen. The numbers were staggering—over forty million dollars in prime real estate and industrial machinery had shifted balance sheets in less than twenty-four hours. For eight years, I had watched my father and brother use those numbers to bully subcontractors, bribe safety inspectors, and force me into submission. Now, those same numbers were sitting beneath my own digital signature.
"What about the legal defense?" I asked, looking up at Adrian, who was staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below, a cup of black coffee in his hand.
"Harrison Cole—their high-priced fixer—withdrew as their counsel this morning," Adrian said, turning around, his blue eyes sharp and calm. The scar through his eyebrow gave his handsome face a dangerous, elite edge. "He realized that if he accepted a single dollar from their remaining hidden accounts, he would be prosecuted for receiving stolen corporate property. Your father and brother are currently being represented by a state-appointed public defender who looks like he’s about to have a panic attack."
"Good," I said, a cold, satisfied feeling settling in my chest. "They don't deserve a defense. They deserve the truth."
"We’re not done yet, Evelyn," Adrian said, walking over to the table and leaning his hands on the dark wood, looking down at me with an intense seriousness. "The Vance family infrastructure was just the first domain. The safety inspector who signed the fraudulent reports that killed my father—Inspector Thomas Sterling—is currently serving as the Chief Building Commissioner for the entire tristate area. He’s the one who protected them for a decade. And he’s the one who holds the key to the secondary network."

"Sterling," I murmured, my mind instantly flashing to the encrypted logs I had extracted from Marcus’s server. "I found his name in the legacy files, Adrian. He wasn't just taking cash bribes from my father. He was receiving regular luxury assets—private resort stays in Aspen, offshore stock options, and high-end vehicles registered under a fake dealership named 'Maple Ridge Luxury Imports.'"
Adrian’s jaw set into a rigid line. "Sterling is hosting a private political fundraising gala tomorrow night at the Grand Imperial Hotel. He thinks he’s safe because Arthur Vance is behind bars and can't talk. He thinks the trail stops at the construction gates. We’re going to walk into that gala, Evelyn. And we’re going to show him that the trail is just beginning."
