Chapter 2: The Silent Poison

Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs as she quietly memorized the name of the drug before Cynthia snatched her bag back up, oblivious that anything had dropped.
"I'm going upstairs to check on Henry," Cynthia said coldly, turning on her Louboutin heels. "Make sure his lunch is nothing but clear broth. No exceptions."
The moment Cynthia left the kitchen, Claire pulled out her small spiral notebook and wrote down the name of the medication: Lorazepam. She knew what it was because her own mother had been prescribed a mild dose during her final days. But in high, unmonitored doses for an elderly man with a weak heart, it didn't heal—it caused profound lethargy, confusion, and the appearance of "pulling away."
Claire went to the pantry, her mind racing. For the last six months, Dr. Lowell had been the only medical professional allowed near Henry. And who had hired Dr. Lowell? Cynthia Vance.
That afternoon, Grant Whitmore arrived at the mansion. He hadn't visited his father in two months, but today was different. He carried a leather briefcase containing the final documents for the seventy-million-dollar hotel acquisition—a deal that required his father's co-signature as the primary trustee of the Whitmore legacy fund.
Grant walked into the kitchen, looking exhausted, his tie loosened. He smelled of expensive cologne and airport coffee.
"Mr. Whitmore," Claire said, pausing her prep.
Grant looked at her, his sharp blue eyes scanning her simple attire. "You’re the cook. Mrs. Ellis tells me my father actually ate last night. Thank you."
"He did, sir," Claire said, stepping forward, deciding to take a massive risk. "But Mr. Whitmore... you need to look at your father's medication. Dr. Lowell is prescribing something that is making him sleep through his life."
Grant’s face hardened instantly. The corporate titan reawakened. "Excuse me? You are a cook, Claire. You are paid to slice vegetables, not critique a top Manhattan neurologist. Dr. Lowell has been a friend of Cynthia’s family for a decade."

"Then why does Cynthia have a bottle of sedatives prescribed by him in her purse?" Claire challenged, her voice steady. "And why is she demanding I only feed him liquids? A man who doesn't eat and is constantly sedated will sign whatever paperwork you put in front of him, Grant. Including giving up his control of the trust."
Grant stared at her, a flash of pure, dangerous anger in his eyes. "You are completely out of line. Pack your bags. You're fired."
