Chapter 2: The Truth Inside the Hospital

Doctors worked frantically for nearly an hour.
Rosa sat outside the emergency room, praying harder than she ever had in her life.
Finally, a pediatric specialist emerged.
"The baby is alive."
Rosa collapsed into tears.
"But he was given an adult sedative," the doctor continued.
"Even a small amount could have been fatal for an infant his age."
A detective standing nearby immediately took notes.
"Who prepared the bottle?"
Before Rosa could answer, Tomás Montiel rushed into the hospital.
He looked from the detective...
to Rosa...
to the tiny bottle sealed inside an evidence bag.
"What happened to my son?"
Valeria stepped forward first.
"The maid panicked," she lied smoothly.
"She probably mixed up the medicine herself."
The detective looked at Rosa.
Rosa's hands trembled.
For one terrible moment, she almost stayed silent again.
Then she remembered Mateo.
Lupita.
And little Santi fighting for his life.
"I saw her do it," Rosa said firmly.
"She poured the medicine into his bottle herself."

The detective quietly replied,
"We'll verify that."
