CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO WOULD BURN THE WORLD QUIETLY

CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO WOULD BURN THE WORLD QUIETLY

The final confrontation didn’t happen at the academy.

It happened at the Ashford estate.

Chloe’s father begged.

Her mother cried.

Lawyers tried to negotiate.

Damien listened to none of it.

He stood in the center of their marble foyer, surrounded by armed silence, while Chloe was forced to stand in front of him.

“You humiliated her,” Damien said.

Chloe trembled. “I didn’t know who she was—”

“That’s the problem,” he interrupted. “You thought it mattered.”

A long silence.

Then Damien pulled out a folder.

Inside: bank collapses. revoked trusts. erased accounts. every door in their world quietly locked forever.

“You’re finished,” he said calmly.

Chloe collapsed into a chair, sobbing.

But Damien was already turning away.

Because punishment had stopped being important.

Something else mattered now.

Back at the hospital, Maren held her stomach as her baby moved for the first time in hours without pain.

Damien sat beside her, quieter than she had ever seen him.

“You could’ve destroyed them more,” she said.

“I did,” he replied.

She looked at him. “No… you restrained yourself.”

For a moment, he didn’t answer.

Then:

“I looked at you on that floor,” he said, voice low, “and realized something.”

“What?”

“That there are things I can’t fix with violence.”

Her fingers tightened around his.

Like she was grounding him.

“And what do you do with things like that?” she whispered.

Damien looked at her—really looked.

“I stay.”

For the first time in years, the man who built an empire of fear chose something else entirely.

Not war.

Not revenge.

But a future.

And as Maren rested her head against his shoulder, the world outside finally stopped trying to destroy them.

Not because it was forgiven.

But because he had decided it was over.
