Chapter 5 - The Shadow Syndicate

By midnight, we had reached an underground haven beneath a historic brownstone in Greenwich Village—an old Speakeasy turned command center, untraceable by modern surveillance. Marco was waiting for us, his arm bandaged where a bullet had grazed him.
"The Feds raided three of our safehouses," Marco reported, holding a encrypted tablet. "Vance is declaring total war. Constantine has mobilized his mercenaries across Midtown. They’re hunting for the girl."
"Let them hunt," Dominic said coldly, pulling out a leather chair for me at a large conference table. "Amelia is going to give us the location of the vault."
I opened the locket using a small hairclip, popping open the false back my father had cleverly crafted. Inside lay a micro-microscopic optical glass lens, etched with faint, microscopic lines of code.
"I need a high-magnification projector," I said.
Within ten minutes, Marco had set up an industrial microscope connected to a central wall display. When the light passed through the tiny lens, a complex schematic of light and shadow filled the room, projecting an intricate blueprint onto the wall.
"It's not a bank vault," I analyzed, scanning the overlapping lines. "It's the vault beneath the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Constantine didn't hide his data in a mob house. He hid it in the safest financial building on earth, using federal infrastructure to protect his corruption."
Dominic stepped up beside the projection, his arms crossed, studying the blueprints. "The Federal Reserve is impossible to breach. Armed guards, motion sensors, biometrics, six-foot-thick reinforced steel."
"It's impossible to breach from the outside," I corrected, a subtle, confident smile touching my lips. "But my father designed the access protocols. He built a backdoor into the vault's environmental control system. If I can get to the primary terminal in the server room, I can open the vault doors remotely."
Dominic turned to look at me, his dark eyes intense, filled with a mixture of dark fascination and something deeper—something dangerous and unbidden.
"You're a quiet little waitress who knows how to rob the Federal Reserve," he said, a slow, mesmerizing smile spreading across his sharp jawline.

"I'm a cryptographer's daughter," I corrected softly. "And I'm tired of hiding."
He stepped closer, his body blocking out the rest of the room, leaning down so his lips were inches from my ear. "If we pull this off, Amelia... you don't just get your revenge. You get your life back. But you stay with me. I don't let rare treasures walk away."
