Chapter 4 - The Tunnels of the Forgotten

Dominic used a heavy tactical flashlight to force open the elevator's ceiling hatch, pulling himself up effortlessly before reaching down to lift me out. His strength was terrifying; he pulled my weight with a single arm, setting me gently onto the top of the cab inside the brick-lined utility tunnel.

We walked through the forgotten subterranean passages of lower Manhattan, the distant rumble of subway cars vibrating through the damp stone walls. Water dripped rhythmically from rusting pipes above.

"The journal," I said, breaking the silence as we navigated a narrow catwalk. "Page twenty-two. It mentions a master key—a physical drive hidden in Manhattan. The cipher isn't just text; it's a map."

Dominic paused, turning the flashlight toward me. "A map to what?"

"To Constantine's total operational framework. Every politician, judge, and law enforcement officer he owns is documented in a digital vault. But the key isn't a password. It's a physical cryptographic token that was split into two pieces six years ago."

"Six years ago," Dominic repeated, his voice dropping an octave. "The night your father died."

"My father didn't just build the code for Constantine under duress," I said, my voice breaking slightly as the truth crystallized in my mind. "He stole the second half of the key to keep Constantine from using it. He died protecting it. And he hid it..." I reached instinctively for the small silver locket resting against my collarbone—the only inheritance my father had left me.

Dominic noticed the gesture immediately. Step by step, he approached me until he was standing directly in front of me in the narrow beam of light. He reached out, his long fingers gently touching the worn silver heart hanging around my neck.

"You've been carrying the key for six years," he murmured, his thumb brushing against the delicate skin of my collarbone.

"I didn't know," I whispered, my breath catching as his hand lingered. "I thought it was just a picture of my mother."

"Amelia," Dominic's voice softened, losing its cold, criminal edge for the first time. "If Constantine realizes what's around your neck, he won't just kill you. He'll burn this entire city to get it."

"Then we hit him first," I said, looking directly into his eyes, finding a strange, dangerous comfort in his unyielding presence. "We use his own code to destroy him."
