Chapter 3

The month of November brought a biting chill,
and it also brought the grand opening of Naomi's housing project.
The building was finished,
and it stood proudly in the southeast neighborhood,
a modern but welcoming structure with wide windows.
The courtyard was filled with newly planted trees,
and the community room was decorated with bright banners,
which had been painted by the local children.
Naomi had been nervous for a week,
and she had lost sleep worrying about the final details,
because this project was a piece of her soul.
Adrian helped her get ready on the morning of the ceremony,
and he buttoned the back of her elegant black dress,
and he kissed the bare skin of her shoulder.
He told her that she had done something extraordinary,
and that she should be incredibly proud of herself,
which made her eyes well up with happy tears.
They drove to the site together,
and Lily sat in the back seat wearing a special velvet dress,
clutching Cloud tightly in her hands.
When they arrived,
the street was already crowded with people,
and the residents were gathered around the main entrance.
Mrs. Owens was there,
and she was wearing a bright purple hat,
and she immediately pulled Naomi into a fierce hug.
Adrian stood back,
and he held Lily's hand,
and he let Naomi have the spotlight she so deeply deserved.
The mayor gave a short speech,
and then he handed the microphone to Naomi,
who stepped up to the podium with a calm grace.
She did not talk about budgets,
and she did not talk about architectural innovations,
she talked about the people who would live inside the walls.
She spoke about dignity,
and she spoke about community,
and her voice carried over the silent crowd with absolute conviction.
Adrian watched her,
and his heart swelled with an overwhelming amount of pride,
because she was the most impressive person he had ever known.
Lily tugged on his hand,
and she whispered that her mother was very loud today,
which made Adrian chuckle quietly.
He whispered back that her mother was a leader,
and Lily nodded solemnly,
accepting this as an undeniable fact.
When the ribbon was finally cut,
the crowd cheered,
and the doors were opened for the residents to see their new homes.
Naomi found Adrian in the crowd,
and she threw her arms around his neck,
and she buried her face in his shoulder.
He held her tightly,
and he smelled the faint scent of jasmine in her hair,
and he told her again how brilliant she was.
They spent the afternoon giving tours,
and eating food provided by the neighborhood vendors,
and celebrating a victory that was truly collective.
Later that evening,
when the crowds had gone home,
and the building was quiet,
they walked through the empty courtyard one last time.
The string lights cast a warm glow over the pavement,
and the new trees swayed gently in the wind,
and it felt like a sacred space.
Naomi took his hand,
and she looked up at the building she had helped create,
and she said she was finally ready to move forward.
She meant more than just her career,
and he knew exactly what she was trying to say,
because they had been slowly merging their lives for months.
He kissed her under the glow of the lights,
and he felt the cold night air on his face,
but his soul was entirely,
completely on fire.
They walked back to the car,
May you like
and they drove home to their sleeping daughter,
knowing that they had built something meant to last.
