Chapter 10

The celebration after the ceremony was wonderfully simple,

and they hosted a late lunch at a cozy,

local Italian restaurant.

They reserved a large table in the back room,

and they drank good wine,

and they ate plates of heavy,

delicious pasta.

The conversation was loud and easy,

and the laughter echoed off the brick walls,

and there was absolutely no pressure to perform or impress.

Adrian sat at the head of the table with Naomi by his side,

and he watched his family interacting with absolute joy.

Paul was telling a ridiculous story about their college days,

and Dana's teenagers were secretly slipping pieces of bread to Lily,

and the grandmothers were arguing good-naturedly about the best way to make sauce.

He reached under the table,

and he found Naomi's hand,

and he intertwined his fingers with hers,

feeling the cool metal of her new ring against his skin.

She leaned closer to him,

and she rested her head on his shoulder,

and she whispered that it was the best day of her life.

He kissed the top of her head,

and he agreed completely,

because the heavy weight he had carried for years was finally gone.

When the lunch was over,

and they had said their goodbyes to their family,

they drove back to their apartment in the late afternoon.

The sun was beginning to set,

and it cast long,

golden shadows across the city streets,

and the world felt incredibly still.

Lily had fallen asleep in the back seat,

exhausted from the excitement of the day,

her red boots kicked off and her head resting on her coat.

Adrian parked the car,

and he carefully carried his sleeping daughter upstairs,

and he laid her gently in her bed.

He pulled the blanket up to her chin,

and he placed Cloud next to her,

and he kissed her forehead softly.

He walked back into the living room,

and Naomi was standing by the large window,

looking out at the park as the streetlights began to flicker on.

He walked up behind her,

and he wrapped his arms around her waist,

and he pulled her back against his chest.

She covered his hands with her own,

and she leaned into his embrace,

and they stood there in absolute,

perfect silence.

They had survived the silence of the past,

and they had fought through the noise of the truth,

and they had finally arrived at a peace that was entirely their own.

He closed his eyes,

and he listened to her steady breathing,

and he knew that the story they were writing now would never be broken.

They were bound by truth,

and they were anchored by love,

May you like

and they were finally,

truly home.
