Chapter 5 - The Siege

The storm outside was nothing compared to the storm that descended upon the Vance Estate that night.
Before Victor could even usher Clara out of the study, the sound of shattered glass and distant gunfire echoed through the mansion. The power instantly cut out, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
"Clara, take my hand!" Victor hissed in the dark.
His strong grip found hers, pulling her down the hallway. "Leo! Secure the children!" Victor shouted into his earpiece.
They reached the children's wing just as two masked gunmen burst through the end of the corridor. Victor didn't hesitate. He pulled Clara behind a marble pillar, drew a sleek, suppressed pistol from beneath his jacket, and fired with lethal precision. Both gunmen fell instantly.
Clara gasped, covering her mouth, but Victor kept her moving. "They breached the outer gates. Moretti is desperate. He knows I am close to destroying his entire operation, and he wants to use you and Caleb to force my hand."
They burst into Lily and Caleb’s shared playroom. Leo was already there, holding both children close. The kids were crying, terrified by the loud noises.
"Papa!" Caleb cried.
"Mommy!" Lily sobbed.
"I have you. I have you both," Clara said, running to them and wrapping her arms around them, using her own body as a shield.
"Leo, take them through the escape tunnel in the basement. Now!" Victor ordered.
"What about you, boss?" Leo asked.
"I'm going to end this," Victor said, his eyes burning with a dangerous, icy fire.
Before he turned to leave, he walked over to Clara. He knelt down, placed a firm, warm hand on the back of her neck, and pulled her into a fierce, desperate kiss. It was a kiss full of promise, of unspoken feelings, and of a vow to return.
"Keep them safe, Clara," Victor whispered against her lips. "I will come back for you."
Clara nodded, her eyes filled with tears. "You better."
Leo led Clara and the children down a hidden staircase behind a bookshelf, into a narrow, concrete tunnel that ran beneath the estate. Above them, the sounds of explosions and gunfire vibrated through the walls. Clara held the children close, whispering stories of brave knights and magical castles to drown out the sounds of the war raging above.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the entrance of the tunnel behind them.

"They found the door!" Leo growled, drawing his weapon. "Run, Ms. Vale! Follow the path to the end. There is a secure vehicle waiting at the exit. Don't look back!"
Clara grabbed Caleb and Lily by their hands and ran as fast as her legs could carry her into the dark, cold tunnel, leaving Leo behind to hold the line.
