Chapter 4 - Two Worlds Collide

The next two weeks at the Vance Estate were unlike anything Clara had ever experienced.

To her surprise, Victor did not behave like the ruthless monster the media painted him to be. In the mornings, she would watch him sit at the breakfast table with Caleb and Lily, patiently helping Lily cut her pancakes while discussing shipping routes on his phone. Lily, who had never known a father figure, took to Victor instantly, charmed by his deep voice and his surprising gentleness with her.

And Caleb, who had been quiet and withdrawn since his mother passed away years ago, blossomed under Clara’s warm, maternal presence. She baked cookies with the children, taught them card games, and filled the quiet, sterile mansion with laughter.

Slowly, the invisible wall between Clara and Victor began to crumble.

One evening, after the children were asleep, Clara found Victor sitting in his dimly lit study, staring out the window at the snow falling over the gardens. He looked exhausted, the weight of his empire pressing down on his shoulders.

"You look like you need a break," Clara said softly, entering the room with a tray holding two mugs of hot cocoa—complete with tiny marshmallows.

Victor looked up, a faint, genuine smile crossing his rugged face. "What is this?"

"An peace offering," Clara said, sitting in the armchair opposite him. "And a thank you. For keeping us safe. For being so good to Lily."

Victor took a mug, his fingers brushing hers, sending a jolt of warmth through her veins. "She is an easy child to love, Clara. Much like her mother." He took a sip, closing his eyes in appreciation. "I don't remember the last time someone made me something just... because."

"In your world, does everything have a price?" Clara asked gently.

"Usually," Victor admitted, his gaze locking onto hers. "But some things are priceless. Like the woman who gave her last meal to my son without asking for a single thing in return. You remind me that there is still good in this world, Clara. A good that I want to protect."

The air between them grew thick with an unspoken, magnetic tension. Victor reached out, his hand gently cupping Clara’s cheek. His thumb stroked her skin, and Clara found herself leaning into his touch, her heart hammering against her ribs.

But just as Victor began to lean in, his phone buzzed violently on the desk.

The moment shattered. Victor answered it, his face instantly hardening back into the cold, ruthless mask of the Vance Don.

"Speak," Victor commanded. He listened for a moment, his eyes darting to Clara with sudden, fierce alarm. "Double the perimeter guards. Now. They are coming."
