Chapter 4 - Stripped of Everything

With his reputation ruined and his corporate funds completely frozen by the federal court, Richard’s life rapidly degenerated into a nightmare. Brooke, realizing that the wealthy lifestyle she had fought for was completely gone, packed her bags and left the state, taking baby Chloe with her and leaving Richard to face the legal consequences alone.

One rainy evening, a month after the press conference, I was leaving the offices of the District Attorney after reviewing the final indictment paperwork. As I walked out toward my car, a disheveled figure stepped out from the shadows of the parking garage.

It was Richard.

He looked unrecognizable. His expensive navy suit was wrinkled and stained, his hair was unkempt, and dark circles hollowed out his eyes. The arrogant, powerful man I had married was completely gone; he looked like a broken ghost.

"Amanda," he called out, his voice hoarse and desperate. He took a step toward me, but my personal security guard immediately moved in front of him, his hand resting firmly on his holster.

"Stay back, Richard," I said, my voice completely cold. "You are violating the temporary restraining order."

"Please, Amanda, just listen to me for one minute!" Richard begged, falling to his knees on the damp concrete. He began to sob, his hands shaking. "The DA is going for the maximum sentence. They’re talking about five years for the fraud and abuse charges! I don't have a lawyer anymore—Sterling dropped me because I couldn't pay his retainer! I’m broke, Amanda! I'm sleeping in a motel!"

I looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger, no satisfaction, just a deep, profound indifference. "You chose this path, Richard. The moment you stood by the fireplace and watched our four-year-old son crawl on the floor like an animal while you boasted about your secret family, you signed your own doom."

"I was stupid! My mother pressured me, she wanted the Whitman name to carry on through a daughter... I didn't mean to hurt Ethan!" he cried out, reaching his hands up in a pleading gesture. "Please, talk to the DA. Ask them to drop the criminal charges. We can settle the divorce quietly. I won't ask for a single dollar of the estate! Just don't let them put me in prison!"

"You still don't get it, do you?" I said softly, stepping around him. "You think this is a negotiation. You think you can trade your dignity for freedom. But you threw your dignity away a long time ago."

I opened my car door and looked back at him one last time. "You told me that night that Ethan didn't belong in your family. You were right. He belongs in a real family. A family that protects him. Goodbye, Richard. Enjoy the trial."

I got into the car, and the driver pulled away into the rainy night, leaving Richard kneeling alone in the dark, weeping on the cold concrete garage floor.
