Chapter 1 - The Midnight Eviction

The laughter fading from Richard’s lips was the last sound of his old life. He genuinely believed that because he wore the Whitman name, he held the keys to the kingdom. He had forgotten that the kingdom belonged entirely to my father, and by extension, to me. The very house we stood in, the high-end furniture, the clean marble floors—every square inch had been bought and paid for by my family trust before our wedding day.
"You're going to make sure we don't belong here?" Richard chuckled, setting his bourbon glass down with an arrogant smirk. "Amanda, be realistic. You're emotional, you're tired from your flight, and you're making a scene in front of Brooke and my mother. Let's not do this now."
"I am not making a scene, Richard," I said, my voice deadpan, chillingly calm. "I am stating a fact."
I didn't argue further. Instead, I pulled out my phone and dialed a three-digit extension. It connected immediately to the estate's private security kiosk at the front gates.
"Marcus," I said, keeping my eyes locked on Vivian, whose smug expression was beginning to falter. "I need three security officers at the main house immediately. We have intruders who refuse to leave."
"Right away, Mrs. Whitman," Marcus replied.
Richard’s smirk vanished. He stepped forward, his face darkening with anger. "Amanda, stop this ridiculous theater right now! You cannot throw my mother and my daughter out into the street! Brooke has nowhere else to go tonight!"
"Then I suggest she finds a hotel," I replied, walking over to the main hallway terminal. I tapped the security system interface, pulling up the live cloud-storage footage from the last forty-eight hours. My heart broke all over again as I watched the recorded clips: my beautiful four-year-old son being shoved away from the dining table, Vivian forcing him to sit on the floor while Brooke fed her baby with silver spoons, and Richard standing by, completely indifferent to his own son's tears.
"You've been recording us?" Vivian gasped, her voice shrill as she clutched the baby tighter. "How dare you spy on your own family! Richard, do something!"
Before Richard could move, the heavy mahogany front doors swung open. Marcus and two uniform security guards stepped into the foyer.
"Mrs. Whitman," Marcus said, bowing his head respectfully. "How can we assist you?"
"Please escort Mr. Whitman, his mother, and their guests off the property immediately," I ordered, holding Ethan closely against my chest. His small hands were still gripping my shirt as if he were terrified I would disappear if he let go. "They are no longer permitted on this estate. If they refuse, call the local precinct and have them processed for criminal trespass."
"Amanda, you've lost your mind!" Richard yelled, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as a guard stepped firmly between him and me. "I am your husband! Half of this estate is mine!"
"Check the prenuptial agreement, Richard. Chapter four, clause two," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "The estate remains sole and separate property. You brought nothing into this marriage, and tonight, you are leaving with exactly that."
Brooke began to cry softly, clinging to Richard's arm. "Richard, please, the baby is cold... do something..."
But Richard was powerless. Marcus and his team politely but unyieldingly guided the three adults toward the door. Vivian hissed insults under her breath, wrapping the silk blanket tightly around the baby, while Richard glared at me with pure venom.
"This isn't over, Amanda!" Richard shouted as the door began to close. "I will take everything from you! I will destroy your reputation, and I will take Ethan!"
The heavy door clicked shut, cutting off his threats. The mansion fell into a profound, beautiful silence.

I sank down onto the bottom step of the grand staircase, letting out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for years. I looked down at Ethan, whose tear-stained face was buried in my neck.
"They're gone, sweetie," I whispered, kissing his dirty hair. "Mommy is here. You are safe, and nobody will ever make you crawl again."
