Chapter 3: The Witness No One Noticed

Chapter 3: The Witness No One Noticed

The black SUV disappeared into the darkness before dawn.
Its engine never roared.
Its tires never screeched.
It simply rolled away from Parker Mansion like a ghost leaving no trace behind.
Inside the vehicle, the man wearing black leather gloves crushed the disposable phone in his hand.
The message had changed everything.
The footage survived.
That meant someone knew the truth.
And if someone knew the truth...
Someone had to be silenced.
Emily returned home two days later.
Although her doctor had recommended another week of rest, Emily insisted on leaving the hospital.
"I won't hide," she told Daniel as they drove through the estate gates.
"If someone wanted to hurt me once, they'll try again."
Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"That's exactly why I don't want you here."
"But running won't protect us."
She gently placed his hand on her stomach.
"Our child deserves parents who don't live in fear."
Daniel looked at her and smiled sadly.
She had always been stronger than he was.
When the mansion came into view, Emily felt a chill run down her spine.
The elegant building no longer felt like home.
It felt like a beautiful prison.
Victoria stood at the front entrance, waiting with a welcoming smile.
"My dear, we're so relieved you're back."
Emily forced herself to smile politely.
"Thank you."
Victoria stepped forward as if to hug her.
Emily instinctively took one small step backward.
The movement lasted less than a second.
But Victoria noticed.
So did Daniel.
An awkward silence settled between them.
Victoria recovered first.
"You must be exhausted."
"I had your room prepared."
Emily nodded.
"I'd like to rest."
Daniel placed a protective hand around his wife's waist.
"I'll stay with her."
Victoria's smile became thinner.
"Of course."
As they walked away, Victoria's pleasant expression slowly disappeared.
Later that afternoon, Daniel met privately with Marcus in the security office.
The enhanced footage played once more.
Marcus paused at the frame showing the attacker's wrist.
"The bracelet."
Daniel nodded.
"It looks exactly like Victoria's."
Marcus leaned closer.
"But look here."
He enlarged the image again.
Hidden beneath the bracelet was something unexpected.
A tattoo.
Tiny.
Barely visible.
The shape resembled a black snake wrapped around a dagger.
Marcus frowned.
"I've never seen Mrs. Parker with a tattoo."
Daniel agreed.
"Neither have I."
"So either this isn't Victoria..."
"...or someone is wearing her bracelet."
The realization hung heavily between them.
Someone could be trying to frame Victoria.
Or Victoria could have given her bracelet to someone else.
Neither possibility was comforting.
Meanwhile, Lily spent the afternoon cleaning the east hallway.
She kept glancing over her shoulder.
Ever since overhearing Victoria's phone call, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her.
She entered the old library carrying fresh flowers.
As she bent over a table, she heard footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
She turned.
No one.
"You're imagining things," she whispered to herself.
Then she noticed a folded piece of paper lying on the windowsill.
It hadn't been there moments earlier.
Her hands trembled as she unfolded it.
Only five words were written.
Keep quiet if you value life.
The blood drained from her face.
Someone knew.
Someone knew she had heard something.
That evening, Emily sat in the nursery folding tiny baby clothes.
Soft yellow blankets covered the rocking chair.
Little stuffed animals lined the shelves.
Everything was ready.
Everything except peace.
She picked up a small knitted sweater.
"I wish you were already here," she whispered to her unborn child.
"You'd remind us what's worth fighting for."
The baby kicked gently.
Emily smiled through tears.
Then—
A creaking sound came from the hallway.
She looked toward the half-open nursery door.
Nothing.
Another creak.
"Daniel?"
No answer.
Slowly she stood.
The hallway was empty.
She walked toward the staircase.
A cold breeze drifted through the house.
One of the upstairs windows had somehow opened.
As she reached to close it, she noticed muddy footprints on the polished floor.
Large footprints.
Fresh.
Leading toward the nursery.
Not away from it.
Toward it.
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
Someone had been inside.
Watching.
Downstairs, Daniel was speaking with George in the garage.
George looked unusually serious.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"I think you should see something."
He led Daniel to the far corner of the garage where the family's vehicles were parked.
One SUV had been moved.
Not far.
Just enough for George to notice.
"The mileage doesn't match."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"This vehicle wasn't used by the family."
"But someone drove nearly eighty miles last night."
Daniel opened the driver's door.
The interior smelled faintly of cigarette smoke.
Not his.
Not Emily's.
George handed him a small flashlight.
"I found this under the seat."
Daniel reached beneath the driver's seat.
His fingers touched cold metal.
He pulled out...
A black leather glove.
His breathing stopped.
It matched the glove in the security footage almost perfectly.
Marcus immediately sent the glove to a forensic laboratory.
"How long?"
Daniel asked.
"A few days."
"I need answers sooner."
Marcus nodded.
"I'll pay for expedited testing."
That same night, Victoria sat alone in her bedroom.
She opened a locked jewelry box.
Inside lay dozens of expensive pieces collected over twenty years.
Diamond earrings.
Gold necklaces.
Ruby rings.
Then she frowned.
One compartment was empty.
Her emerald bracelet was gone.
She searched frantically.
Every drawer.
Every shelf.
Nothing.
Someone had taken it.
She whispered to herself,
"Impossible..."
Then another thought struck her.
Someone wanted that bracelet seen.
Someone wanted suspicion to point toward her.
For the first time since Emily's accident...
Victoria looked genuinely frightened.
Just after midnight, Lily finally made her decision.
She couldn't remain silent any longer.
She quietly walked toward Daniel's study carrying the threatening note hidden inside her apron.
She raised her hand to knock.
Before her fingers touched the door—
Someone grabbed her arm.
Hard.
She gasped.
A gloved hand covered her mouth.
"Don't scream."
The voice was low.
Male.
Terrifyingly calm.
The attacker dragged her into the dark hallway behind the servants' staircase.
Lily struggled desperately.
Her cleaning bucket crashed onto the floor.
Water spread across the marble.
She kicked backward with all her strength.
The man lost his balance for one second.
It was enough.
She bit his hand through the glove.
He cursed.
She broke free.
"Help!"
Her scream echoed through the mansion.
Lights turned on upstairs.
Doors opened.
Daniel rushed into the hallway.
"What happened?"
Lily stumbled toward him, shaking uncontrollably.
"He..."
"He..."
She pointed toward the darkness.
"He tried to stop me..."
Daniel ran after the attacker.
The shadow disappeared through the kitchen.
Out the back entrance.
Across the gardens.
Daniel followed as fast as he could.
The figure climbed over the stone wall surrounding the estate.
Then vanished into the woods.
Daniel stopped, breathing heavily.
The only thing left behind was a torn piece of black fabric caught on the iron fence.
He carefully removed it.
Inside the cloth...
A stitched emblem remained intact.
A silver crest.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
It belonged to a private security company.
One that had protected the Parker family years ago.
A company his late father had personally hired.
A company that no longer officially existed.
Back inside, Lily sat wrapped in a blanket while Emily held her trembling hands.
"It's okay," Emily whispered.
"You're safe now."
Lily shook her head violently.
"No."
"No, I'm not."
Daniel knelt beside her.
"Lily."
"I need you to tell me everything."
She looked from Daniel to Emily.
Tears streamed down her face.
"I heard Mrs. Victoria talking on the phone."
Emily stiffened.
"What did she say?"
Lily swallowed hard.
"I didn't hear the whole conversation."
"But I clearly heard her say..."
"The next opportunity."
Silence filled the room.
Daniel's face remained unreadable.
Lily continued.
"And yesterday..."
"I found this."
She handed him the folded note.
Daniel opened it.
KEEP QUIET IF YOU VALUE LIFE.
Emily covered her mouth.
Daniel slowly folded the paper again.
"This changes everything."
Marcus entered the room at that moment carrying his own phone.
His expression was grim.
"The lab just called."
"So soon?"
"They rushed the preliminary analysis."
Daniel stood.
"And?"
Marcus took a deep breath.
"The glove recovered from the SUV contains DNA."
Emily whispered,
"Whose?"
Marcus looked directly at Daniel.
"The results don't match anyone currently employed at the mansion."
Daniel frowned.
"Then who?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"They match someone who disappeared seven years ago."
He paused.
"The former head of Parker family security."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Ethan Cross?"
Marcus nodded.
"The man everyone believed died in a boating accident."
The room fell silent.
Because if Ethan Cross was alive...
Then someone had spent seven years pretending he was dead.
May you like
And now he had returned for one reason.
To finish the job that had almost killed Emily Parker.
