Chapter 2: Shadows in the Blue

Chapter 2: Shadows in the Blue

The next morning, Daniel arrived at Aunt Marta’s daycare with two lawyers and a private medical team. The yellow room looked exactly as Lupita described—faded posters of smiling animals, plastic bins of toys, and a faint chemical smell beneath the lemon cleaner.

Marta Ruiz, a tired woman in her fifties, denied everything at first. “We run a clean place. Parents love us.”

Daniel played a recording of Lupita’s testimony. Marta’s face paled. Miss Tessa—her niece—was called in. The young woman shifted nervously, avoiding eye contact.

Under pressure and the threat of immediate lawsuits, Tessa cracked. The “blue juice” was an experimental sleep aid mixed with melatonin and an unregulated sedative her boyfriend, a disgraced pharmacist, had been supplying. It was meant to keep rowdy kids calm during naps. Nico had received extra doses because he was “high energy.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold. Poison. Slow, hidden poisoning.

He had the place shut down by child services within hours. Blood samples from Nico were rushed for advanced toxicology. Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Lupita visited again. This time she brought a small wooden cross her grandmother had given her.

“I prayed all night,” she told Daniel. “God doesn’t want Nico to leave yet. He still has dinosaurs to chase.”

Daniel, the man who trusted balance sheets more than miracles, found himself listening. Marisol flew back from Denver that afternoon. Their reunion was icy. She begged for forgiveness, blaming her own postpartum struggles and fear of his judgment. Daniel couldn’t look at her without seeing the empty dinosaur blanket.

Toxicology results came in partial: elevated levels of a rare compound. Not enough to convict immediately, but enough to explain the rapid decline. Dr. Salgado adjusted treatment aggressively. For the first time in days, Nico opened his eyes briefly and whispered, “Dino…”

Hope flickered.

But Tessa’s boyfriend vanished. Daniel poured resources into finding him. Private jets, rewards, everything. The media caught wind— “Millionaire’s Son Poisoned at Secret Daycare”—and the story exploded across social platforms. Comments flooded in: prayers, outrage, shares of Lupita’s photo (with permission).

Daniel sat by Nico’s bed reading the messages aloud. One from a single mother: “That little girl is an angel. Don’t lose faith.”

Guadalupe, Lupita’s mother, was offered a better job and housing by Daniel. She accepted humbly. Lupita became a fixture in the room, telling Nico stories even when he slept.

Tension peaked when Tessa was arrested. She implicated her boyfriend in a larger scheme selling the sedative to multiple daycares. The dark hospital secret was no longer secret—it was front-page news.
