Chapter 3: The Price of Boundaries

Chapter 3: The Price of Boundaries

The following week was a whirlwind of legal filings. My parents, thinking money could fix everything, hired an attorney to try and argue that I had "implied" permission for family use. It was a bluff, but it was an exhausting one. I didn't back down. I counter-sued for the damages to the property and the loss of rental income.

The town of Lakewood began to buzz with the scandal. It was the "Brooks Family War." Friends I thought I had began to take sides. Some called me heartless; others, seeing the truth, reached out to support me.

Madison, now living in a budget motel, began leaving me voicemails that swung from sobbing apologies to vitriolic hate. She blamed me for her kids’ trauma, for her eviction, and for the fact that my parents were now refusing to help her because they were too busy trying to "win" the lawsuit against me. The irony was suffocating. I spent my nights in the quiet of the Alder Street house, slowly repairing the walls and painting over the stains, reclaiming my space one room at a time. I was alone, yes, but for the first time, I was at peace.
