Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Gate

The following week, the atmosphere in the Hale mansion shifted. The boys were no longer disasters; they were helpers. Under Clara’s guidance, they learned to clean up after themselves, help with basic cooking, and most importantly, they started laughing again. Even Victor began coming home early for dinner, joining them at the table instead of retreating to his study with a glass of whiskey.
But the peace was shattered on a Tuesday afternoon.
Clara was in the front garden with the boys, helping them plant winter pansies in the soil, when a sleek black SUV pulled up to the security gates. The gates opened, and the car drove up the curved driveway, stopping with a loud screech of tires.
The door opened, and a man in an expensive gray suit stepped out. His hair was slicked back, and his handsome face was twisted into a patronizing sneer.
It was Derek. Clara's ex-husband.
Clara felt the blood drain from her face. She immediately pushed the boys behind her. "Mason, take your brothers inside. Go to Mrs. Whitaker right now."
"But Clara—" Ryder began.
"Now, boys. Go," she commanded, her voice leaving no room for argument. The quadruplets, sensing the sudden danger, ran toward the house without a word.
Derek walked over, his eyes scanning the massive mansion, the perfectly manicured lawns, and finally landing on Clara’s mud-stained jeans and simple sweater.
"Well, well, Clara," Derek mocked, laughing dryly. "I had to hire a private investigator to find out where you've been hiding. A nanny? You’re a servant for a rich guy's spoiled brats? Is this the 'stable environment' you’re going to present to the judge next week?"
"Leave, Derek," Clara said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to remain calm. "You have no right to be on this property. This is private ground."
"I have every right to protect my daughter from a mother who has to scrub toilets to survive," Derek hissed, stepping closer, his demeanor turning aggressive. He reached out and grabbed Clara's arm roughly. "Look at you. You're pathetic. If you think a judge is going to let you keep Lily after they see photos of you working as domestic help, you're delusional. Sign the custody papers today, and I won't humiliate you in court."
"Let go of her."
The voice didn't come from Clara. It came from the front porch.
Victor Hale stood there, his dark eyes burning with a lethal fury. He walked down the steps slowly, his steps measured and dangerous. Behind him, two burly security guards in dark suits stepped into view.
Derek let go of Clara’s arm, trying to maintain his arrogant composure. "And who are you? Her boss? Listen, buddy, this is a private family matter—"
"I am Victor Hale," Victor said, standing directly between Derek and Clara, his towering frame completely eclipsing the other man. "And you are currently trespassing on my estate, assaulting my employee, and violating several state laws."
Derek's eyes widened. Even a man as arrogant as Derek knew the name Victor Hale. "Mr. Hale... I didn't mean... she's my ex-wife. She's unfit—"
"The only unfit person I see here is a man who intimidates women because he is too weak to stand on his own feet," Victor said, his voice cold enough to freeze the air. "My security team has recorded this entire interaction on our high-definition cameras. You grabbed her. That is physical assault."
Derek took a step back, his face turning pale. "Now, wait a minute—"
"If you do not leave this property in ten seconds," Victor continued, his tone dangerously calm, "I will not only have you arrested, but I will personally ensure that every bank, business partner, and client associated with your firm knows exactly what kind of coward they are doing business with. I can ruin you before the sun sets, Derek. Test me."
Derek looked at Victor’s cold, unyielding expression, then at the two massive security guards stepping forward. Realizing he was completely outmatched, Derek scrambled back into his SUV, slammed the door, and sped down the driveway, the tires screaming in retreat.
Clara sank onto the stone bench, her strength completely leaving her body. She covered her face with her hands, the tears she had been holding back for months finally spilling over.
Victor knelt in front of her, his large hands gently taking hers away from her face. "Clara, look at me."

She looked at him through her tears.
"He will never touch you again," Victor promised, his voice filled with a fierce, protective warmth. "I swear to you. You and Lily are safe."
