Chapter 2 - THE SNARE OF THE MATRIARCH

Within minutes, the grand ballroom was transformed into a chaotic crime scene. Blue and red police lights strobed against the high arched windows, casting eerie shadows over the manicured lawns. The wealthy guests were escorted out, their faces glued to their phones as the first wave of leaks hit the internet. The headlines were already writing themselves: VANCE HEIR FOUND ALIVE: MATRIARCH ACCUSED OF KIDNAPPING.

In the private study, the air was thick with tension. Julianne sat on the plush leather sofa, refusing to let go of Leo. A female paramedic was gently cleaning and stitching the wound on Leo's shoulder. Arthur paced back and forth, his hands gripping his hair, while Detective Thomas Miller, a hardened investigator who had never quite believed the original drowning report five years ago, stood by the desk, taking notes.

Victoria Vance sat in an armchair opposite them, handcuffed to the armrest. Even in cuffs, she held her chin high, her eyes cold and calculating.

"This is a farce," Victoria said, her voice dripping with venom. "A coordinated setup to ruin me. Julianne, you have always hated my influence over Arthur. You found this orphan, paid someone to surgically alter him, and brought him here to stage this circus."

Julianne didn't even look up at her. She was whispering comforting words to Leo, kissing his forehead, wiping away his tears. "Shh, my love. You're safe. I'm right here. No one will ever lock you in the dark again."

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller interrupted, his voice dry. "The boy has a rare genetic marker and a very specific birthmark on his hip, which matches the medical records from his birth. Furthermore, our forensics team just searched the old cottage on the north side of your estate. We found a hidden basement room. Inside, we found the boy's DNA, child-sized clothing, and a lock that can only be opened from the outside. Your fingerprints are all over the keycard scanner."

Victoria’s jaw clenched, a tiny muscle twitching in her cheek. For the first time, a crack appeared in her armor. But she was a predator; she didn't surrender easily.

"My mother-in-law," Julianne said, her voice deadly calm as she finally looked up, her amber eyes burning with a cold, righteous fury. "She didn't do this alone. She couldn't have. Someone helped her fake the boat accident. Someone helped her keep a two-year-old hidden for five years without anyone noticing."

Julianne’s eyes shifted slowly to her husband.

Arthur stopped pacing. His face drained of what little color he had left. "Julianne... no. You can't think... I didn't know. I swear to God, I thought he was gone! I grieved him!"

"Did you, Arthur?" Julianne asked, her voice cracking with betrayal. "Or were you just too busy enjoying the inheritance that freed up the moment our son was declared dead? You signed the papers, Arthur. You signed the custody-transfer clause that gave your mother full control of the estate's offshore accounts if Leo was 'unable to inherit.' You signed it three days after the funeral!"

"I was grieving! She told me it was to protect the company from hostile takeovers!" Arthur cried, dropping to his knees before Julianne, trying to grab her hand. "Julianne, please. You have to believe me. She is my mother, but she is a monster. I had no idea she kept him alive in that... that cage!"

"Get away from her," Detective Miller warned, stepping between Arthur and Julianne.

Suddenly, Victoria laughed. It was a cold, chilling sound that made Leo shiver.

"You are all so naive," Victoria mocked. "You think putting me in jail solves this? You think the Vance empire belongs to you now, Julianne? If I go down, I drag every single one of you with me. The offshore accounts, the political bribes, the contracts... everything that keeps this family afloat is tied to my name. If you press charges, the Vance Corporation assets will be frozen. You will be penniless. Your precious restored son will have nothing but a name dragged through the mud."

"I don't care about the money, Victoria," Julianne said, standing up and holding Leo close to her hip. "I want you behind bars. I want you to rot."

"We'll see about that," Victoria hissed as Detective Miller unlocked her cuffs from the chair and began leading her out. "A good lawyer can make a child's testimony look like brainwashing, Julianne. You haven't won yet."

As Victoria was led out, she passed Arthur. She paused, leaning in to whisper just loud enough for Julianne to hear: "Ask your husband about his secret trip to Switzerland three years ago, Julianne. Ask him who he met in the secure vault."

With those parting words, Victoria was escorted out into the flashing lights of the media circus. But inside the study, a new, suffocating doubt had just been planted. Julianne looked at Arthur, and for the first time, she saw a stranger.
