CHAPTER 4: THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

CHAPTER 4: THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

The word Who are you? still hung in the air.

Victor Blackwood didn’t expect an answer.

But Chloe gave him one anyway.

“I don’t know,” she said softly.

And somehow, that was worse than anything else she could have said.

The room felt smaller now.

Not physically—but in a way that made every breath heavier.

Victor stood between the window and the desk, as if he no longer knew where he belonged inside his own office.

His empire outside still existed.

Buildings. Contracts. Money. Power.

But inside this room, none of it mattered anymore.

Nora broke the silence first.

“We need to leave this place.”

Victor turned sharply.

“What did you say?”

Nora stood protectively in front of Chloe.

“You heard me. This is exactly why I never wanted her near you.”

Victor’s eyes darkened.

“Near me?”

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“She is already inside this.”

He stepped forward slowly.

And for the first time, there was something unstable in his voice.

“If what you’re saying is true… then someone used my daughter’s disappearance… and your child… to build a lie around me.”

Nora didn’t answer.

Because that was exactly what she feared.

Victor suddenly walked to his desk and pressed a hidden button.

A panel slid open on the wall.

Inside: security files. encrypted records. decades of archived data.

Nora stiffened.

“You still have access to all of that?”

Victor didn’t look at her.

“I never stopped looking.”

Chloe watched quietly.

Then she spoke.

“What are you looking for?”

Victor paused.

Then answered without turning around:

“The truth.”

He pulled out a folder.

Opened it.

His expression changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

And then something close to anger.

Inside were old security logs from the night of the disappearance.

But they weren’t complete.

Entire sections were blacked out.

Erased.

Manually overwritten.

Victor’s voice lowered.

“This wasn’t a disappearance.”

He looked at Nora.

“This was a cover-up.”

Nora’s hands tightened.

“I told you…”

Victor cut her off.

“No.”

A pause.

“This goes deeper.”

He pointed at the files.

“These deletions weren’t done by staff. Not by external hackers.”

His eyes sharpened.

“This was done from inside my executive network.”

Silence.

Then Nora whispered:

“You’re saying someone in your inner circle erased her existence.”

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Chloe suddenly stepped forward.

“Why would someone do that to a child?”

Victor looked at her.

And for the first time, his voice softened.

“I don’t know yet.”

A pause.

“But I intend to find out.”

He turned back to the files.

And then stopped.

Something else was inside the folder.

A recent document.

Not twenty years old.

Current.

Victor frowned.

“This shouldn’t be here.”

He opened it.

His expression changed again.

This time—pale.

Controlled shock.

Nora stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Victor didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The company has been transferring silent funds for years.”

A pause.

“To an unknown recipient.”

Nora blinked.

“That’s impossible.”

Victor turned the document toward her.

“It’s real.”

Chloe stepped closer.

“What does it mean?”

Victor’s voice dropped.

“It means someone has been using my empire… without my knowledge.”

A long silence followed.

Then Nora whispered:

“And you think this is connected to your daughter?”

Victor didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

He turned back to the files.

Flipping pages faster now.

Searching.

Obsessed.

And then—

He stopped.

There was a name.

Repeated across multiple sealed reports.

A name that should not exist in any official Blackwood document.

Nora saw it too.

Her face changed instantly.

“No…”

Victor looked at her.

“You recognize it.”

Nora stepped back.

“I thought it was just a rumor…”

Victor’s voice sharpened.

“Say it.”

Nora swallowed.

Then whispered:

“Elias Mercer.”

The moment the name was spoken—

Victor froze.

Chloe felt it too, even though she didn’t understand why.

The room itself seemed to react.

Victor’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“That name died twenty years ago.”

Nora shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“It didn’t.”

She looked at Victor.

“It’s the name of the man who built your private research division.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“That division was shut down after my daughter disappeared.”

Nora nodded.

“It was supposed to be.”

A pause.

“But it wasn’t destroyed.”

Chloe looked between them.

“What is that division?”

Victor didn’t answer her immediately.

Instead, he said quietly:

“A group of people who studied musical cognition.”

Nora’s voice trembled.

“And something else.”

Victor looked at her.

Nora finished:

“They weren’t just studying music.”

A pause.

“They were studying memory encoding through sound.”

Silence.

Then Victor whispered:

“That’s not possible.”

Nora stepped forward.

“It was never supposed to continue.”

A pause.

“But someone made sure it did.”

Victor suddenly turned.

Walked to the wall again.

Pressed another hidden sequence.

A screen flickered on.

Encrypted access logs.

His hands moved fast now.

Too fast.

Driven by something breaking inside him.

Chloe watched quietly.

Then asked:

“Is that why I know the music?”

No one answered immediately.

Because neither adult wanted to say the next part out loud.

Victor finally spoke.

“If what Nora is saying is true…”

He paused.

“Then your connection to that melody is not coincidence.”

A breath.

“It’s design.”

Nora shook her head.

“No… I didn’t let anyone—”

Victor turned sharply.

“I didn’t say you did.”

A pause.

“I said someone used you.”

The screen suddenly flickered.

An alert appeared.

Unauthorized access detected.

Victor froze.

Nora stepped back.

“What is that?”

Victor’s face darkened.

“Someone is watching this room.”

Chloe instinctively grabbed Nora’s hand.

The room felt colder.

The empire outside suddenly irrelevant.

Because now—

Something inside it had noticed them.

Victor moved quickly.

“Get behind me.”

But before anyone could react—

The screen changed.

A message appeared.

No sender.

No trace.

Just one line:

“She was never lost.”

Victor’s breath stopped.

Nora went pale.

Chloe whispered:

“What does that mean?”

And then—

The lights in the room flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then stabilized.

But everything had already changed.

Because now they knew:

May you like

The disappearance was not the end.

It was the beginning.
