Chapter 7 - The Phoenix

Six months later.

The grand opening of Fields & Co., a high-end harbor dining space overlooking the bay, was the event of the season. The restaurant was built entirely from reclaimed timber from old shipping vessels, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls that offered panoramic views of the water. It was 100% legitimate, funded through clean venture capital, and owned entirely by me.

I stood near the entrance in a sleek navy jumpsuit, holding a leather clipboard as the evening rush began. The floor was filled with laughter, the clinking of wine glasses, and the bustling energy of a thriving business.

"Table four needs another bottle of Pinot Noir, boss," a young waitress said, smiling as she passed by with a tray.

"On it, Sarah," I replied, feeling a deep swell of pride in my chest.

Through the front windows, I saw a familiar black sedan pull up. Dante stepped out, looking striking in a charcoal suit without a tie. Over the past six months, he had kept his promise. The illegal operations had been shut down or transferred, the authorities satisfied through high-profile cooperate settlements, and the Moretti name was now synonymous with urban redevelopment and philanthropy.

Dante walked inside, bypassing the host stand and coming straight to me.

"You look busy," he whispered, leaning down to kiss my cheek lingeringly.

"We're fully booked for the next three weeks," I smiled, leaning into his touch. "How was your meeting with the harbor board?"

"Approved," Dante said, wrapping his arm around my waist. "We start construction on the new public park next Monday."

He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, setting it gently on the edge of my clipboard.

My breath hitched. "Dante... what is this?"

"Open it," he murmured.

I clicked the silver clasp open. Inside sat a breathtaking ring—a pear-cut emerald surrounded by delicate white diamonds that caught the light like stars.

"You saved my life on that mountain road, Cara," Dante said, his gray eyes shining with absolute devotion. "And every day since, you've saved my soul. I don't want a life without you in it."

He took the ring from the box, looking down at my hands. The faint white scars on my palms were still visible—a permanent reminder of the night we met, of the mud and the blood and the tree that almost snapped.

"Cara Fields," Dante asked softly, "will you marry me?"

Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes as I looked at the man who had transformed my world. I didn't see a mafia boss or a dangerous titan. I saw the man who held my hand in the dark, who fought for my safety, and who loved me with every beat of his heart.

"Yes," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Dante. Absolutely yes."

He lifted me slightly off my feet, pulling me into a passionate kiss right there in the middle of the crowded restaurant. The staff and patrons burst into applause, but for us, the noisy room faded into silence.

We had both survived the crash. And together, we had built a life that no storm could ever destroy.
