Chapter 5: The Wolf Behind the Curtain

Chapter 5: The Wolf Behind the Curtain

The smoke lingered inside the abandoned lighthouse long after the intruders had vanished.

Daniel stood perfectly still, his lungs burning from the chemical haze. Every instinct screamed at him to chase them, but years of business negotiations had taught him one painful lesson.

Never pursue an enemy who has already prepared your route.

Instead, he slowly bent down and picked up the black business card.

The silver wolf embossed on its surface gleamed in the pale morning light.

It wasn't merely a logo.

It was a warning.

Rosa climbed down from the maintenance ladder, coughing violently.

"Are they gone?"

Daniel nodded.

"They got what they came for."

"The journal..."

He slipped the card into his jacket.

"Which means it contained something they feared I'd read."

Outside, fresh tire tracks cut across the muddy ground.

Four identical black SUVs had left the lighthouse less than five minutes earlier.

Daniel examined the tracks before pulling out his phone.

"Marcus."

His head of security answered immediately.

"Mr. Kane."

"I need satellite traffic footage covering every road leading away from Blackwater Lighthouse during the last thirty minutes."

"I'll start now."

"And Marcus..."

"Yes, sir?"

"Don't involve Sterling Manor security."

A brief silence followed.

"You think someone inside the estate is compromised."

"I don't think."

Daniel looked back toward the lighthouse.

"I know."

By the time they returned to Sterling Manor, the atmosphere had changed completely.

Luxury sedans lined the circular driveway.

Reporters crowded outside the gates.

Television vans occupied both sides of the road.

Daniel frowned.

"What happened?"

Marcus met him before he reached the front entrance.

"You need to see this."

He handed Daniel a tablet.

Every major news network carried the same headline.

STERLING GLOBAL SHIPPING UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION

Daniel stared.

"What?"

Marcus opened the article.

Anonymous financial documents had been leaked overnight.

The reports alleged decades of tax fraud, offshore money laundering, and executive corruption inside Sterling Global.

The company's stock had already fallen eighteen percent before markets had fully opened.

Daniel's phone exploded with incoming calls.

Board members.

Investors.

Banks.

Government officials.

Somebody had started a war.

Inside the mansion, Victor Lang waited in the grand foyer.

The family attorney looked unusually nervous.

"You've seen the news."

Daniel walked past him without answering.

Victor followed.

"The board has called an emergency meeting."

"When?"

"One hour."

Daniel stopped walking.

"Who leaked the files?"

Victor hesitated.

"We don't know."

Daniel turned slowly.

"You do."

"I—"

"You've represented this family for twenty-six years."

Victor looked away.

"No financial documents leave Sterling Global without passing through your office."

Silence.

Daniel stepped closer.

"So I'll ask you one more time."

"Who leaked them?"

Victor's forehead glistened with sweat.

Before he could answer, another voice interrupted.

"I did."

Daniel spun around.

Margaret stood at the top of the grand staircase.

She looked immaculate.

Fresh navy suit.

Pearl earrings.

Perfect makeup.

As though yesterday had never happened.

Two private security guards stood behind her.

Neither belonged to Sterling Manor.

Margaret descended one step at a time.

"I wanted your attention."

Daniel stared in disbelief.

"You destroyed Father's company."

"No."

She smiled faintly.

"I forced you to stop looking in the wrong direction."

Daniel's anger barely remained under control.

"You poisoned Ava."

Margaret tilted her head.

"Did I?"

"The laboratory confirmed mercury."

"Interesting."

She continued walking.

"But laboratories only identify poison."

"They don't identify who administered it."

Daniel's fists clenched.

"You expect me to believe someone else did this?"

"I expect you to stop assuming."

For the first time...

Margaret looked genuinely serious.

"You think I'm the monster."

"Aren't you?"

She sighed.

"I've done terrible things."

A long pause followed.

"But poisoning Ava wasn't one of them."

Daniel searched her face.

She had lied countless times.

Yet something about her eyes felt different.

Not innocent.

Certain.

Almost offended.

"I don't believe you."

"I know."

Margaret nodded toward the library.

"Which is exactly what someone else wants."

She reached into her handbag.

Pulled out a thick envelope.

"I've spent twenty-five years preparing for today."

She handed it to Daniel.

"Read it after the board meeting."

"I'm not interested."

"You will be."

He didn't take it.

Margaret simply placed it on a nearby table.

"When Arthur confronted me about the missing money..."

"...he wasn't investigating me."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"He was protecting someone."

Before Daniel could respond, Margaret walked away.

Halfway across the foyer she stopped.

Without turning around she quietly said,

"And Daniel..."

"The man with the silver wolf..."

"He isn't my ally."

Then she left the mansion.

An hour later...

Sterling Global Headquarters.

The executive boardroom overlooked downtown Manhattan through floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Every director had already arrived.

The atmosphere was poisonous.

No one smiled.

No one exchanged pleasantries.

The company's stock continued falling minute by minute.

Daniel entered last.

As CEO, he took the seat at the head of the table.

Immediately, board member Charles Whitmore spoke.

"We need answers."

Another director interrupted.

"Federal investigators are requesting financial records."

"Our lenders are freezing credit."

"This company may not survive the week."

Voices erupted from every side.

Daniel raised one hand.

The room fell silent.

"I'll answer every question."

The board relaxed slightly.

Then the conference room doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman in a charcoal-gray suit entered carrying a leather briefcase.

She appeared to be in her early forties.

Calm.

Confident.

Professional.

"I apologize for interrupting."

Daniel frowned.

"This meeting is private."

She smiled politely.

"It was."

She placed an official document on the table.

"My name is Rebecca Sloan."

Several directors immediately recognized the name.

Their expressions changed.

Rebecca Sloan was one of New York's most feared corporate litigators.

She represented governments.

International banks.

Billion-dollar whistleblower cases.

Never private families.

"What are you doing here?" Daniel asked.

She opened her briefcase.

"I represent the estate of Arthur Kane."

Daniel blinked.

"My father's estate has been settled for five years."

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

"It hasn't."

She removed a sealed court order.

"The probate process was intentionally suspended under confidential judicial authority."

Every board member stared.

Daniel slowly stood.

"What are you talking about?"

Rebecca slid another document toward him.

"Arthur Kane created two estates."

"The public estate."

"And a private contingency estate."

She looked directly into Daniel's eyes.

"The second one activates only if Sterling Global faces evidence of internal criminal conspiracy."

Silence filled the boardroom.

Rebecca continued.

"As of eight forty-two this morning..."

"...that condition has officially been met."

She pressed a button on a remote control.

The enormous presentation screen illuminated.

Arthur Kane appeared.

Another video.

Recorded only days before his death.

Arthur looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then the wolves have finally stepped into the light."

The board members exchanged uneasy glances.

Arthur continued.

"The person who stole from Sterling Global..."

"...is not the person you believe."

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

May you like

Then Arthur spoke the name that stunned everyone in the room.

"It was..."
