CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE HAD ERASED THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE HAD ERASED THE TRUTH

By sunrise, the investigation had grown far beyond the walls of the Bennett estate.

What had begun as an apparent "accident" beside a swimming pool was now unfolding into one of the largest corporate crime investigations in the country's recent history.

Television crews lined the streets outside Bennett Global headquarters.

Financial reporters crowded the courthouse.

Social media erupted with theories.

Some believed Vanessa Sinclair had acted out of jealousy.

Others suspected family rivalry.

Only a handful of people knew the truth was far more dangerous.

This had never been about jealousy.

It had been about money.

Billions of dollars.

Daniel Bennett hadn't slept.

He remained at the hospital, sitting beside Emma's bed while she rested.

The rhythmic sound of the baby's heartbeat echoed softly from the fetal monitor.

Each beat reminded him of how close he had come to losing both of them.

Emma slowly opened her eyes.

"You should go home."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I'm exactly where I belong."

"You've been here all night."

"So have you."

She reached for his hand.

"Have they found anything?"

Daniel hesitated.

He didn't want to burden her.

But Emma had always preferred the truth.

"No."

She studied his face.

"That's not your 'nothing' face."

He laughed quietly.

"You still know me too well."

"What happened?"

He leaned closer.

"The security footage confirms everything."

Emma closed her eyes for a moment.

"So she really pushed me."

"Yes."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I kept wondering if maybe I imagined it."

Daniel gently wiped the tear away.

"You never have to question yourself."

She squeezed his hand.

"Not while I'm here."

Across the city, Vanessa Sinclair entered the forty-second floor of Langford Capital.

The office was empty except for one man.

Victor Langford.

Sixty-two years old.

Silver-haired.

Perfectly tailored suit.

The image of calm.

Yet his fingers tapped nervously against his desk.

"You've become very famous."

Vanessa threw her purse onto a chair.

"This isn't funny."

"I didn't say it was."

"They have footage."

Victor stopped tapping.

"What kind of footage?"

"The pool."

His expression remained unreadable.

"Does it clearly show anything?"

"I don't know."

She began pacing.

"Richard Hale claims everything uploaded automatically."

Victor stood.

"Sit down."

"I can't."

"Sit."

His voice carried enough authority that she obeyed.

He walked slowly toward the panoramic windows overlooking the city.

"When we started this arrangement..."

He spoke without turning around.

"...I asked you one question."

Vanessa remained silent.

"Do you remember it?"

She nodded.

"You asked whether I could stay calm under pressure."

"And what did you answer?"

"I said yes."

Victor finally turned.

"You lied."

Meanwhile, inside Bennett Global's forensic accounting division, dozens of analysts examined years of financial records.

Every wire transfer.

Every signature.

Every shell company.

Every trust authorization.

Millions of digital documents filled enormous screens.

One analyst suddenly froze.

"I found something."

The room immediately quieted.

"What is it?"

She enlarged a transaction history.

"These approval codes..."

Another analyst leaned closer.

"They belong to Emma."

The first analyst shook her head.

"No."

She highlighted several entries.

"They're copies."

Silence spread across the room.

Copied authorization codes.

Forged approvals.

Someone had been stealing money using Emma's digital identity.

The theft hadn't lasted weeks.

It had lasted nearly three years.

Richard Hale arrived moments later.

"How much?"

The analysts exchanged nervous looks.

"No final number yet."

"Estimate."

The senior accountant swallowed.

"Between three hundred..."

He paused.

"...and four hundred million dollars."

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

He had expected fraud.

Not theft on that scale.

"Can you prove it?"

The analyst nodded.

"Every fake authorization originated from one encrypted server."

"Location?"

She typed rapidly.

Then frowned.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"The server no longer exists."

Richard wasn't surprised.

"They destroyed it."

"Not exactly."

She turned the monitor toward him.

"It was destroyed yesterday."

"Yesterday?"

"At exactly 8:43 p.m."

Richard checked the timeline.

Emma had fallen into the pool at 8:39.

Four minutes later...

The server had been remotely wiped.

Someone panicked.

Someone knew the attack had failed.

Back at Langford Capital, Victor poured himself a glass of expensive whiskey.

Vanessa stared at him.

"Say something."

He did.

One sentence.

"You've ruined everything."

"I was trying to help."

"No."

His voice remained cold.

"You were trying to rush the plan."

"You said Emma would never sign."

"I said we'd pressure her."

"You also said—"

"I never said murder."

The room became completely silent.

Vanessa slowly stood.

"I didn't try to kill her."

Victor looked directly into her eyes.

"Then why did you push an eight-month-pregnant woman into a swimming pool?"

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Because for the first time since the incident...

She realized how her actions looked to everyone else.

At noon, Detective Laura Mitchell arrived at the hospital.

Daniel greeted her outside Emma's room.

"How is she?"

"Recovering."

"And the baby?"

"Stable."

Laura nodded.

"Good."

She opened a thick folder.

"I've reviewed the footage."

Daniel waited.

"It's enough to file attempted murder charges."

He expected relief.

Instead he asked,

"Will you?"

Laura hesitated.

"Yes."

"But?"

She lowered her voice.

"I think someone higher up is trying to interfere."

Daniel wasn't surprised.

Victor Langford still had powerful connections.

"How high?"

She met his eyes.

"I've already received two phone calls suggesting we delay the arrest."

Daniel smiled.

Not happily.

Just knowingly.

"Did you?"

Laura smiled back.

"No."

By late afternoon, news helicopters circled downtown.

Employees inside Langford Capital noticed something unusual.

Unmarked police vehicles.

Federal investigators.

Financial Crimes Division.

The elevator doors opened.

Detective Laura Mitchell stepped out accompanied by twelve officers.

The receptionist immediately stood.

"Can I help you?"

Laura displayed her badge.

"We're here for Victor Langford."

The office fell silent.

Employees stopped typing.

Phones stopped ringing.

Conversations ended instantly.

Victor emerged from his office.

"I've been expecting you."

Laura approached calmly.

"Victor Langford?"

"Yes."

"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit financial fraud, identity theft, obstruction of justice, and pending charges related to the attempted murder investigation involving Emma Bennett."

Gasps echoed throughout the floor.

Employees reached for their phones.

News spread through the building within seconds.

Victor extended his wrists without resistance.

"You'll never prove attempted murder."

Laura secured the handcuffs.

"We'll let the jury decide."

As officers escorted him toward the elevators, Victor glanced once toward Vanessa's empty office.

She was gone.

She had disappeared less than twenty minutes earlier.

That evening, Richard received another phone call.

The voice on the other end belonged to airport security.

"Mr. Hale?"

"Yes."

"We thought you'd want to know."

Richard straightened.

"What happened?"

"We stopped Vanessa Sinclair."

"Where?"

"Private aviation terminal."

His expression hardened.

"Was she leaving the country?"

"She tried."

"And now?"

A brief pause.

"She wasn't alone."

Richard frowned.

"Who was with her?"

The answer sent a chill through the room.

"A member of the Bennett family."

Richard's face changed instantly.

"What did you say?"

"We've confirmed the identification twice."

The officer spoke carefully.

"It appears someone inside your own family was helping her escape."

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

Daniel looked up from across the office.

"What is it?"

Richard answered quietly.

"The attack wasn't carried out by outsiders."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"It came from inside the family."

Outside, cameras flashed as Victor Langford was driven away in handcuffs.

Across the city, Vanessa sat in an interrogation room.

But the greatest betrayal had yet to be revealed.

Because hidden inside the Bennett family was someone who had secretly helped steal hundreds of millions of dollars...

Someone who had planned to remove Emma before she could expose the truth.

And when Daniel discovered who that person was...

May you like

His entire world would be turned upside down.
