Chapter 3 - The Storm of Public Judgment

Chapter 3 - The Storm of Public Judgment

The next weeks blurred into a frenzy of court hearings, media interviews, and sleepless nights. Paparazzi camped outside the mansion gates, drones buzzing overhead like mechanical insects. Christopher had installed additional security, but the invasion felt relentless. Emma, now under round-the-clock protection, began seeing a child psychologist recommended by Dr. Harlan. The sessions were slow, filled with drawings of dark water and shadowy figures.

In the courthouse, the preliminary hearing for Juliette’s attempted murder charge drew massive crowds. Juliette appeared in a modest gray dress, eyes downcast, dabbing at tears with a handkerchief. Her legal team painted her as a devoted stepmother driven to despair by Emma’s “behavioral issues” and Christopher’s emotional neglect.

“She slipped,” Juliette sobbed on the stand. “I reached for her—I swear on my life!”

Christopher’s testimony was devastating. He played the full, unedited recording in open court. The jury and spectators heard Estelle’s cold voice clear as day: “Make sure the little problem never reaches the lawyers.” Gasps rippled through the room. Estelle, present under subpoena, sat rigid, her face a mask of contempt.

Outside, protests erupted—some supporting “justice for Emma,” others decrying the wealthy elite’s dysfunction. Social media exploded with hashtags #SaveEmmaPierce and #PierceScandal. Fundraising pages for child abuse victims swelled with donations in Emma’s name.

Back at the mansion, Christopher tried to shield Emma from the worst. They planted flowers in Rachel’s old garden, a quiet sanctuary behind high hedges. Emma’s hands, still small and hesitant, patted soil around daffodil bulbs. “Mommy liked yellow,” she said. Christopher smiled through the pain, telling her stories of Rachel’s laughter, her paintings, her fierce love.

Yvette became Emma’s constant companion, sharing warm cookies and tales of the “good old days” before the darkness. But threats continued. A brick smashed through a window with a note: She still breathes because we allow it. Christopher hired ethical hackers to trace the messages. They led to a burner phone linked to one of Juliette’s distant cousins—a low-level thug with gambling debts.

Estelle, facing her own legal scrutiny for conspiracy, attempted reconciliation. She visited the conservatory one afternoon, pearls gleaming, voice honeyed. “Christopher, darling. This has gone too far. Family first. Emma can have a generous trust, but the Pierce name—”

“Leave,” Christopher interrupted, standing tall. “You chose the name over blood long ago.”

Estelle’s facade cracked. “You ungrateful boy. I built this empire!”

“You destroyed it with your poison,” he replied.

The chapter’s tension peaked during a board meeting at Pierce Global. Shareholders demanded Christopher’s resignation amid the scandal. He walked in, Emma’s latest drawing—a bright sun over a happy family—tucked in his pocket for courage. In a powerful speech, he laid bare the truth: “My daughter is not a problem to be erased. She is the future of this family. If you want profits over humanity, vote me out. But I will fight with everything I have.”

The board, swayed by public sentiment and rising stock recovery on sympathy waves, voted to support him. Juliette’s allies were purged.

Yet, in the shadows, Victor Lang plotted with Estelle. A new witness—a paid-off former nanny—prepared to testify that Emma was unstable and the recording fabricated.

The storm raged on, but Christopher stood firm, his love for Emma the anchor.
