Chapter 6 - The Grand Jury Indictment

The inclusion of Chloe’s testimony and the encrypted files from Evelyn’s computer completely shattered the defense’s strategy. On a cold Tuesday morning, the grand jury returned a sweeping, historic multi-count indictment against the Miller family. Evelyn Miller was formally charged with two counts of First-Degree Capital Murder, attempted murder of a minor, child abuse, and grand larceny. Trevor Miller was indicted as an accessory to capital murder, insurance fraud, and obstruction of justice. His brother, Gregory, was arrested at his office for corporate embezzlement and money laundering tied to the insurance scheme.
The news hit the town like a megaton bomb. The arrogant, wealthy Miller empire—a family that had controlled local politics and businesses for generations—was dismantled in a single afternoon. The local police station was swarmed by reporters from across the country as the three family members were processed in orange jumpsuits and heavy chains.

Sitting in Prosecutor Rachel Chang's office, I watched the live broadcast of Trevor being led into the county jail. He looked broken, haggard, his head bowed in shame as reporters shouted questions at him. For months, I had felt a crushing guilt, wondering if I had somehow failed as a mother, if I had missed the signs that my babies were in danger. But seeing those monsters in chains, the heavy fog of grief began to lift, replaced by a fierce, burning resolve to see justice carried out to its absolute end.
"The trial begins in two weeks, Sarah," Rachel told me, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Evelyn refused a plea bargain. She still believes her family name and money will save her. We are going to put her on the stand, and we are going to make sure she never sees the light of day again."
