Chapter 7: The Last Witness

Chapter 7: The Last Witness

Morning sunlight poured through the conference room windows at the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force headquarters.

Emily sat quietly at the end of the table, a notebook open before her.

Across from her, Detective Harris and Detective Brooks reviewed the evidence recovered from William Carter's hidden archive.

The brass compass rested inside a sealed evidence bag.

Beside it sat the repaired cassette, the film reels, and William's journals.

For the first time, the investigation had a clear direction.

"We've authenticated every document," Brooks said, sliding a report across the table.

"The signatures match."

"The dates match."

"And the corporate filings line up with public records."

Emily looked up.

"So my father was telling the truth."

"He documented everything," Harris replied.

"And because he kept contemporaneous records, they carry significant evidentiary value."

A knock interrupted the meeting.

A federal agent stepped inside.

"Ms. Carter?"

Emily stood.

"There's someone here asking to speak with you."

Vanessa Morgan looked exhausted.

She had changed her hair color, wore plain clothing, and carried no handbag.

Only a small backpack hung from one shoulder.

"I wasn't sure you'd come," Emily admitted.

"I almost didn't."

Vanessa sat down slowly.

"I've spent weeks deciding whether to disappear..."

"...or tell the truth."

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

"This is why they were looking for me."

Detective Harris carefully picked it up.

"You've kept this the entire time?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Daniel never knew I copied it."

The task force's digital forensics lab began examining the drive immediately.

A technician connected it to an isolated workstation.

"There are encrypted files."

"Emails."

"Accounting spreadsheets."

"And..."

He paused.

"A video."

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

"Can we open it?"

The technician nodded.

A progress bar slowly reached one hundred percent.

The screen flickered.

William Carter appeared.

Older than in the previous recordings.

Calm.

Composed.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're seeing this, then someone chose integrity over fear."

Emily felt tears gather in her eyes.

Her father's voice filled the room once more.

"Do not assume every person connected to this case is your enemy."

The room fell silent.

William continued.

"Some remained because they believed they had no way out."

Detective Brooks quietly made notes.

This wasn't just evidence.

It was context.

The recording ended with one final instruction.

"When the time comes, trust the documents—not rumors, assumptions, or anger."

Emily lowered her eyes.

It sounded exactly like the advice he had given throughout her childhood.

Later that afternoon, Richard Owens met Daniel at the detention center.

"The investigation has changed."

Daniel looked up.

"I know."

"They found William Carter's archive."

Richard nodded.

"They also recovered digital records."

Daniel sat silently for several moments.

Finally he asked,

"If I cooperate now..."

"...does it still matter?"

Richard answered honestly.

"It can."

"But it has to be complete."

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

For the first time since his arrest, he seemed less concerned about protecting himself than about ending years of deception.

"I'll make a statement."

As evening settled over the city, Detective Harris received the preliminary forensic report on the flash drive.

Most of the files matched the records from William's archive.

One folder, however, had no title.

Only a date.

Inside was a single spreadsheet listing dozens of names connected to companies that had appeared over three decades.

Emily scanned the page.

Most names meant nothing to her.

Then she stopped.

Halfway down the list was one name she recognized immediately.

She looked at Harris.

"There has to be some mistake."

Harris slowly shook her head.

"The forensic team has already verified the file."

Emily stared at the screen.

One of the names belonged to someone her father had trusted for years.

If the document was accurate, the conspiracy William Carter had uncovered had reached much closer to home than anyone had imagined.
