Chapter 6 - The Intruders

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped animal. The threat text message flashed in his mind: “Don't call the police, or the old man by the lake gets a visit too.”

It wasn't a bluff. The people who had snatched Sophia and his son were connected to a larger syndicate—one that had been circling the Whitmore estate assets for months. And now they were coming for Richard to force the remaining signatures they needed to liquidate the family trust.

The first intruder, a broad-shouldered man with a jagged scar across his jaw, motioned toward the back door, slipping the crowbar beneath the wooden latch. With a sharp, muffled crack, the lock gave way.

Inside the cabin, the sound echoed clearly over the crackle of the fire.

Richard immediately looked up from his journal. He didn't panic; instead, his eyes narrowed with sharp, veteran alertness. He stood up from his armchair with surprising speed, stepping toward the heavy oak desk in the corner where he kept an old landline and a heavy brass paperweight.

"Who's there?" Richard's voice rang out, steady and commanding, cutting through the silence of the cabin.

"Shut up, old man, and keep your hands where we can see them," the second intruder hissed, stepping through the broken back door with a heavy-duty zip-tie in hand.

Ethan couldn't wait another second. He didn't have a weapon, but he had the element of surprise.

Creeping along the shadowed deck, Ethan spotted an old firewood rack filled with heavy oak logs. He grabbed a thick, splitting maul by its wooden handle, its weight reassuringly solid in his frozen palms.

Inside the cabin, the man with the zip-tie lunged toward Richard. The old man dodged with agile grace, grabbing the heavy brass paperweight and bringing it down with surprising force across the intruder's shoulder, sending him staggering back.

"You little—!" the scarred man roared, drawing a heavy hunting knife from his belt and stepping toward Richard.

Before the blade could descend, Ethan smashed through the side window in an explosion of glass and splintered wood, roaring like a wounded bear. He vaulted over the shattered frame, landing squarely on the scarred intruder’s back, sending both of them crashing hard onto the hardwood floor.

The hunting knife clattered away across the room, sliding under the sofa.

"Ethan?!" Richard shouted, his eyes widening in shock as he watched his son grapple with the burly intruder.

"Get back, Dad!" Ethan grunted, throwing a fierce right hook that connected squarely with the man's jaw.

The second intruder recovered quickly from Richard’s blow, shaking off his daze and lunging toward Ethan with a heavy metal flashlight raised to strike. But before he could connect, a loud, sharp click echoed from the doorway.

A silver revolver was pointed squarely at the second intruder's chest.

Richard stood six feet away, holding his late father’s vintage Smith & Wesson service revolver with a grip as steady as a rock, his thumb resting calmly on the hammer.

"Drop the light, son," Richard said, his voice deadly calm. "Or I'll blow a hole right through your chest."
