Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The atmosphere in the grand ballroom had shifted entirely. What was supposed to be a quiet, high-society showcase for the Bennett and Holloway families had transformed into an impromptu military honor guard.
Arthur Bennett stood frozen near the head table, his mouth slightly open, looking like a man who had walked onto a stage without knowing his lines. Beside him, Melanie clutched her husband Ethan’s arm so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"Ethan..." Melanie whispered, her voice trembling with embarrassment and anger. "What is happening? Who are these people?"
Ethan didn't answer her. His eyes were wide as he looked at Chief Daniel Mason and the rows of decorated officers standing at attention. Ethan’s father, Richard Holloway, stepped past Arthur without saying a word, walking directly toward the center aisle to meet Claire.
"Admiral Bennett," Richard said respectfully, offering his hand as Claire stepped out from the back corner. "It is an absolute honor to meet you. My firm built the radar integration systems for your flagship. I had no idea you were Arthur's daughter."
"Mr. Holloway," Claire replied smoothly, shaking his hand with a firm, practiced grip. "Thank you. And congratulations on your son's wedding."
"Why didn't Arthur tell us?" Richard asked, glancing back at Arthur with a look of deep suspicion and disgust. "He led everyone to believe you were doing basic clerical work."
"My father has always had his own perspective on my career," Claire said gently, keeping her tone professional.
Senator Vance approached, extending a hand as well. "Admiral, I heard you're retiring on Monday. The Senate Armed Services Committee is going to miss your testimony. You've served this country with immense distinction."
"Thank you, Senator."
By now, the entire room had gathered around the center aisle. Guests who had ignored Claire ten minutes earlier were now whispering, pointing, and pulling out their phones to record the scene. The prestigious "Holloway social circle" that Arthur had spent months boasting about was now lined up to introduce themselves to the older sister he had banished to Table 18.
Arthur snapped out of his trance. The humiliation was too much for his fragile ego to bear. He pushed through the crowd, his face dark with rage, stepping into the center aisle right in front of Claire.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. "Claire, did you plan this show? Did you hire these people to come here and ruin your sister’s night?!"
Chief Mason took a step forward, his eyes narrowing as he glared at Arthur, but Claire raised a single finger, signaling her team to stand down.
"Dad," Claire said quietly, her voice cold and steady. "I didn't invite anyone. These men and women came on their own."
"You arranged this to humiliate me!" Arthur spat, completely blind to the fact that two hundred guests, including his new in-laws, were watching him unravel. "You’ve been doing this your whole life! Always looking for attention, always trying to prove you’re better than everyone else in this family! You couldn't just give Melanie one normal day, could you?!"
Eleanor rushed over, trying to grab Arthur’s arm. "Arthur, quiet, please... people are watching—"
"I don't care!" Arthur yelled, shoving his wife’s hand away. He turned back to Claire, pointing an accusing finger at her chest. "You think because you put on a rank and have a few officers bowing down to you that you're somebody? You're nothing! You were a mistake from the day you were born, and I should have left you in Norfolk thirty-six years ago!"
The entire ballroom went dead quiet.
Chief Mason’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. Luis Alvarez stepped up beside Claire, his eyes flashing with danger.

Claire didn't move. She stared into her father's eyes, catching the strange, desperate panic hiding behind his anger.
"What did you just say?" Claire asked quietly.
