Chapter 4 - The Shadow at the Gate

Dinner at Adrian’s brownstone was nothing short of surreal.

The cold, intimidating CEO turned out to be an attentive, funny, and surprisingly skilled cook. He made homemade fettuccine from scratch, patiently letting Mia toss flour around his immaculate kitchen while laughing off the mess.

For the first time in four years, I felt safe. Truly safe.

By 9:30 PM, Mia was sound asleep in Adrian’s guest room, tucked under a warm duvet. I stood on the balcony off the living room, holding a glass of red wine, looking out over the rain-slicked streets of New York.

The door behind me opened, and Adrian stepped out onto the balcony, sliding his hands into his pockets. He stood close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his shoulder.

“She’s a great kid, Nora,” he said gently. “You did an incredible job raising her.”

“Thank you,” I replied, looking up at him. “It wasn't easy. When David left, he tried to make sure I had nothing. I fought for every inch of my life.”

“You won’t have to fight alone anymore,” Adrian declared softly. He took the wine glass from my hand, set it on the small balcony table, and took both of my hands in his. “I know this is fast. I know today was chaos. But I meant what I said, Nora.”

“Adrian... it’s terrifying,” I admitted, my voice trembling slightly. “You’re my boss. You’re... Adrian Kane. I’m just a single mother trying to hold her world together.”

“You are not 'just' anything,” he scolded gently, cupping my face in his warm hands. His gray-blue eyes searched mine with intense devotion. “You are the strongest, most resilient woman I’ve ever met. And if you’ll let me, I want to give you and Mia the world.”

He leaned down slowly, giving me time to pull away.

I didn't pull away.

When his lips touched mine, a wave of pure fire rushed through my veins. The kiss was gentle at first, full of restraint, but as I wrapped my arms around his neck, it deepened into something passionate, desperate, and intoxicating. All the unsaid feelings of the past two years exploded between us in the quiet rain.

When we finally separated, both of us breathless, Adrian pressed his forehead against mine, his chest heaving.

“Say you’re mine, Nora,” he rasped. “Tell me I’m not dreaming.”

“I’m yours,” I whispered back, a tear of pure happiness slipping down my cheek.

Suddenly, the sleek video intercom near the balcony door chimed with a harsh, buzzing sound.

Adrian frowned, stepping back to switch on the security monitor. His expression hardened instantly into a mask of pure fury.

On the high-definition camera screen standing outside the front gates of the brownstone was David Vance. He looked disheveled, drunk, and furious, pounding his fists against the iron security gate.

“Nora!” David’s voice blared through the speaker, slurred and filled with rage. “I know you’re in there with him! You think you can use this billionaire bastard to destroy my family?! Open the gate, you crazy bitch!”

My blood turned to ice. Panic flared up in my chest as I took a step back. “Oh God... David.”

Adrian didn't panic. He straightened his shoulders, his gray-blue eyes turning into absolute glaciers.

“Stay here,” Adrian commanded calmly.

“Adrian, no! He’s crazy! He has a temper!”

Adrian looked back at me, a cold, deadly smile gracing his lips. “Nora, sweetheart... you still don't understand who I am. David Vance just walked into his own execution.”
