Chapter 4 - Face to Face with the MonsterMy breath hitched in my throat. I pressed my back against the cold concrete wall of the basement, my hands instinctively shielding my baby bump. The footsteps began to descend the stairs, slow and deliberate.

"Did you really think Arthur’s little 'gift' was for your kids?" Eleanor laughed, a chilling, mocking sound that echoed in the tight space. She reached the bottom of the stairs, the beam of her own flashlight cutting through the darkness until it landed squarely on my face, blinding me. "Arthur found out that Mother and I used David's name to secure the offshore funds. He wanted to play the hero and give you the evidence so you could 'protect' your naive husband. But I couldn't let that happen. My career, my status, my life—everything I built depends on David taking the blame if the feds ever close in."
"You monster," I spat, tears of pure fury blinding my eyes. "You struck a six-year-old girl with a lamp! Your own niece! She is in a coma right now because of your greed!"
Eleanor stepped closer, the light illuminating her pristine silk blouse, now contrastingly dark against the grimy basement. "She shouldn't have been looking into my purse. It was an accident, Clara. A momentary lapse in judgment. But if she wakes up and talks... well, that complicates things for me."
"She won't have to talk," a powerful, booming voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
Eleanor spun around in shock as the basement lights suddenly flooded on. David stood at the top of the stairs, flanked by four police officers with their weapons drawn. His face was a mask of absolute betrayal and righteous fury. He had seen my car outside and entered the house just in time to hear his sister’s full confession through the baby monitor I had left plugged into the kitchen wall, which was connected to the receiver in our bedroom.
"Drop your weapon, Eleanor Vance!" an officer shouted.
Eleanor looked at David, her face twisting into a mask of pathetic desperation. "David, please! She’s lying! She’s trying to set me up!"

"I heard everything, Eleanor," David said, his voice breaking as tears finally spilled down his cheeks. "You used me. You tried to ruin my life, and you almost killed my daughter. You are no sister of mine."
The officers rushed down the stairs, tackling Eleanor to the damp basement floor. As the handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists, she screamed obscenities, cursing my name, cursing her brother, completely consumed by her own toxic greed. Upstairs, another team of officers arrested Margaret, who was waiting in a getaway car down the street. The reign of terror of the Vance women had finally reached its chaotic, disgraceful end.
