Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light

Six months later.

The grand opening of the newly renovated Grand Sovereign Hotel was the event of the season in Chicago. High society, city officials, and legitimate business leaders filled the dazzling glass lobby, sipping champagne and listening to a live jazz quartet.

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Michigan Avenue was Sophie Vance. She moved through the crowd with absolute poise and confidence, greeted by city council members and international hotel guests alike as a brilliant, rising star in the hospitality industry.

Her younger brother, now fully recovered from his medical procedures, stood nearby, laughing with a group of architects who had handled the hotel's redesign.

A tall, commanding figure in a dark, perfectly tailored tuxedo stepped up beside her.

Lorenzo Moretti didn't carry a weapon tonight. He held two flutes of vintage champagne, handing one to Sophie with a quiet, knowing smile.

"A successful night, Miss Vance," Lorenzo murmured, his shoulder lightly brushing against hers as they looked out at the city lights.

"The occupancy rate for the first quarter is at ninety-four percent," Sophie replied, a playful spark in her dark eyes. "The ledgers are completely balanced, Mr. Moretti."

"I never doubted your numbers," Lorenzo said softly.

He turned to face her, taking her hand in his. The scars on his knuckles—remnants of a violent past—looked soft under the warm, amber lighting of the hotel lobby.

"The family business is stable," Lorenzo said, his voice a low, intimate vibration that only she could hear. "Carmine and Gianna are running the street operations strictly within legal boundaries now. I'm stepping down from the day-to-day operations next month."

Sophie looked at him, her heart swelling with an emotion she had spent months trying to suppress. "And what will you do with your free time?"

Lorenzo raised her hand to his lips, pressing a soft, deliberate kiss to her knuckles, his dark eyes never leaving hers.

"I plan on spending it right here," Lorenzo said softly. "With the only woman who ever made me freeze in the dark."

Sophie smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that swept away every lingering ghost of the past. She reached up, gently adjusting his silk tie, her fingers lingering against his chest, right over the steady, calm beat of his heart.

Outside, the Chicago wind blew cold against the glass, but inside the Grand Sovereign, surrounded by light, peace, and an unbreakable trust forged in the dark, Lorenzo Moretti and Sophie Vance had finally found their sanctuary.
