CHAPTER 2 — THE LAWYER WHO REFUSED TO LIE

CHAPTER 2 — THE LAWYER WHO REFUSED TO LIE

The first thing Christopher did after leaving his mother’s wing was destroy silence.

Not literally—but strategically.

He made calls.

Short. Controlled. Absolute.

And within thirty minutes, the Pierce estate stopped being just a home.

It became a legal battlefield.

The Lawyer Who Didn’t Pick Up

The name Christopher dialed first was Daniel Mercer.

Senior estate attorney. Twenty years with the Pierce family. A man who had rewritten wills like other people rewrote grocery lists.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

Voicemail.

Christopher frowned.

That wasn’t normal.

Daniel Mercer always answered.

Always.

Even at midnight. Even in crisis.

Christopher tried again.

This time, the call didn’t even connect.

A dead line.

Yvette, standing near the living room doorway, noticed his expression.

“He’s been silenced,” she said quietly.

Christopher looked at her. “By who?”

Yvette didn’t hesitate.

“By your mother.”

That answer should have felt like speculation.

It didn’t.

It felt like structure—like something already in motion long before today.

Emma’s New Reality

Downstairs, Emma sat wrapped in a dry blanket too large for her small body.

She wasn’t crying anymore.

That worried Yvette more than tears would have.

“Do you feel safe here?” Yvette asked softly.

Emma nodded.

Then paused.

Then shook her head.

“Sometimes,” she whispered. “I feel like the house listens.”

Yvette didn’t dismiss it.

In houses like this, children rarely invented paranoia.

They translated it.

“Listen to me,” Yvette said gently. “No one will take you anywhere without your father knowing.”

Emma looked up.

“Even Grandma?”

A pause.

Yvette chose honesty carefully.

“Especially her.”

The Locked Office

Upstairs, Christopher forced open Daniel Mercer’s private office inside the estate.

It was untouched.

Too untouched.

The kind of untouched that meant someone had already been there.

Every file cabinet was locked.

Except one drawer.

Slightly ajar.

Christopher pulled it open.

Empty.

Not just empty—wiped.

No documents.

No notes.

No backup copies.

A professional erasure.

He exhaled slowly.

“Mother,” he muttered.

Behind him, footsteps echoed.

Yvette had followed.

She didn’t speak until she saw the drawer.

Then she said something that changed the direction of everything:

“He didn’t leave voluntarily.”

Christopher turned sharply.

“What do you mean?”

Yvette stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“Daniel Mercer was in contact with me three days ago. He asked questions about Emma’s trust structure. Specific ones. Dangerous ones.”

Christopher’s eyes narrowed.

“And?”

“He told me he was afraid your mother was rewriting succession terms without legal consent.”

That stopped Christopher cold.

Because in legal terms, that wasn’t just manipulation.

It was fraud.

The Missing Lawyer

Christopher made one more call.

This time, to Daniel Mercer’s personal number.

It rang once.

Then a second time.

Then picked up.

But it wasn’t Daniel.

A woman’s voice answered.

Calm. Polite.

“Mr. Pierce?”

“Yes,” Christopher said sharply. “Where is Daniel Mercer?”

A pause.

Then:

“He is unavailable.”

That phrase.

Unavailable.

Not dead.

Not missing.

Unavailable.

Christopher’s grip tightened.

“Put him on the phone.”

“I’m afraid I can’t.”

“Why?”

Another pause.

Then the answer came.

Soft.

Carefully chosen.

“Because he is currently being relocated for his own protection.”

The line went dead.

The First Crack in Estelle’s Armor

Christopher stood still for a long moment.

Then turned to Yvette.

“This is kidnapping,” he said.

Yvette didn’t correct him.

Because she couldn’t.

Not honestly.

Instead, she said something more important:

“If Daniel Mercer disappears entirely, the estate becomes uncontestable.”

Christopher understood instantly.

That was the point.

His mother wasn’t just protecting assets.

She was locking the narrative.

Emma would be erased from legal existence before she could be protected by law.

And Juliette’s role?

Not just an attacker.

A placeholder.

A temporary tool.

Emma Overhears Something She Shouldn’t

Downstairs, Emma wandered slightly into the hallway.

She wasn’t supposed to.

But children in fear rarely follow instructions perfectly.

She heard voices upstairs.

Her father’s.

Yvette’s.

Strained.

Fast.

Words she didn’t understand:

“trust structure,”
“removal clause,”
“legal guardianship,”
“invalidated inheritance”

But she understood one thing clearly.

Her name kept being mentioned.

And every time it was mentioned, the tone changed.

From protection…

To urgency.

The Return Message

Christopher’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

No sender ID.

Just text:

“Stop looking for Mercer.
You will only make it worse for the child.”

Christopher stared at it.

Then showed it to Yvette.

Her face went still.

“That’s not a threat,” she said quietly.

Christopher looked at her.

“It is exactly a threat.”

Yvette shook her head once.

“No,” she said. “It’s leverage.”

That word changed the temperature of the room.

Leverage meant something worse than violence.

It meant control.

Someone was watching Emma closely enough to know she was the weak point.

And confident enough to admit it.

Estelle Makes Her Move

At the top floor, Estelle Pierce finally left her room.

Slow. Controlled.

She descended the stairs like nothing had changed.

Like nothing ever changed.

When she reached the main hall, she saw Christopher standing with his phone still in his hand.

“Daniel Mercer has been removed,” she said calmly.

Not a question.

A statement.

Christopher turned to her.

“You did it.”

Estelle’s expression remained composed.

“I protected the estate from legal contamination.”

“By kidnapping our attorney?”

Estelle tilted her head slightly.

“If you prefer dramatic language.”

Christopher stepped closer.

“You’re trying to erase Emma from the inheritance.”

Estelle looked at him for a long moment.

Then said something that made Yvette’s stomach tighten:

“I am trying to preserve what remains of this family.”

Christopher shook his head slowly.

“No,” he said. “You’re trying to preserve control.”

A silence stretched between them.

Then Estelle spoke again.

And this time, her voice sharpened.

“If you pursue this path, Christopher, you will lose everything you think you’re protecting.”

He didn’t hesitate.

“I already lost enough listening to you.”

The Child in the Hallway

Emma stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Small. Quiet.

Watching.

Neither adult noticed her at first.

But when they did—

Everything stopped.

Estelle’s gaze softened slightly.

“Emma,” she said. “Come here, child.”

A command disguised as kindness.

Emma hesitated.

Christopher moved instantly.

“No,” he said firmly, stepping between them.

That single movement changed the geometry of the house.

Father.

Daughter.

Grandmother.

No longer a family.

A split.

Estelle studied Christopher for a long moment.

Then said quietly:

“You are making an enemy you cannot afford.”

Christopher didn’t look away.

“I already have one,” he replied. “You just stopped pretending otherwise.”

Cliff Edge

That night, the estate security system flagged a breach.

Not physical.

Digital.

Someone was attempting to access Emma’s identity records.

Birth certificates.

Trust documents.

Medical files.

All at once.

Yvette looked at the screen and whispered:

“They’re accelerating.”

Christopher stood behind her.

“No,” he said.

“They’re panicking.”

And somewhere deep inside the Pierce estate—

A system began to collapse faster than it could be repaired.

Because for the first time,

May you like

the truth wasn’t being hidden.

It was being fought over.
