Chapter 9 - The Junior Inspector

Inside the wooden box lay a shiny, custom-minted silver badge.
It was shaped like a traditional investigator's star, polished to a brilliant mirror shine. Engraved across the center in crisp block letters were the words:
CARUSO RESTAURANT GROUP CHIEF QUALITY & SAFETY INSPECTOR LILY ROMANO
Below the title, tiny numbers were engraved into the silver: Tag #047.
Lily’s eyes went wide. She reached into the box with extreme care, touching the smooth silver metal with the tip of her index finger.
"Is it real?" she whispered.
"It's as real as it gets," Dominic said, his voice rich with warmth. "In fact, it comes with an official job responsibility."
"What job?" Lily asked, looking up at him solemnly.
"From now on," Dominic explained, leaning in as if sharing a top-secret operational briefing, "every single paper claim tag used in this restaurant has to be inspected by you before it goes to the coat check. If you see a tear, a fake stamp, or the wrong ink... you tell me immediately."
Lily picked up the heavy silver badge. She pinned it onto the front of her yellow cardigan sweater, right above her heart. She stood up straight in the booth, puffing out her chest.
"I will check all the papers," she stated with absolute four-year-old authority. "No broken tags."
Elena walked over, wiping a tear from her cheek as she pulled her daughter into a gentle hug. "Thank you, Mr. Caruso. For... for everything. You didn't have to do any of this for us."
"You are family now, Elena," Dominic said, standing up and shaking her hand firmly. "And in this house, we look after our family. Starting next Monday, you are promoted to Head of Guest Operations for the entire restaurant group. Double the salary, full corporate health benefits, and a private apartment in the building next door."
Elena gasped, her hands covering her mouth in disbelief. "Mr. Caruso... I don't know what to say... I can't accept all of that—"
"You earned it, Elena," Dominic said firmly. "You showed more integrity in one night than forty corporate executives showed in five years. The position is yours."
Just then, the heavy front glass doors of Caruso’s opened.
Senator Vance stepped into the lobby, wearing a heavy winter coat. He looked around at the pristine dining room, then spotted Dominic.
"Dominic," Senator Vance said, walking over with an extended hand. "I came as soon as I heard the news from Prosecutor Jenkins. I am deeply, deeply sorry about my brother Raymond's involvement in Hale's scheme. I had no idea he was compromising the Port Authority board."
Dominic shook the Senator's hand firmly. "You're not responsible for your brother's choices, Senator. What matters is that Route 19A is safe, and the medical shipments to Queens are moving without delay."
"I spoke with the Governor an hour ago," Senator Vance continued, his voice filled with sincere admiration. "The state is officially naming the Brooklyn-Newark medical freight corridor the Dominic Caruso Public Health Line."
"Don't name it after me," Dominic said, looking down at the little girl standing proudly with her silver star badge. "Name it after the person who actually saved it."
Senator Vance looked at Lily, noticing the silver badge pinned to her yellow sweater. The veteran politician smiled warmly, bending down on one knee.

"Well then," Senator Vance said politely to Lily. "It's an honor to meet you, Inspector Romano."
Lily saluted the Senator with her stuffed rabbit, making everyone in the lobby burst into warm, genuine laughter.
