Chapter 4 - The Whispering Gallery

By Friday afternoon, the news of the Cole family fracture had spread through their social circles like wildfire.

Elena had not spent the week sitting quietly in an empty house. Instead, she had launched a vicious, calculated campaign across social media and neighborhood grapevines. Posts began appearing on local community boards describing David as a "controlling, emotionally abusive husband who isolated his wife and manipulated his children." Photos of Elena looking frail and tearful, sitting in her pristine living room, were shared widely among school parent groups.

When David pulled his truck up to Mia’s middle school to pick her up, he noticed the sudden silence that fell over the group of mothers standing near the pickup zone. Eyes followed him as he parked. Whispers drifted through the air.

Mia rushed out of the school building, her backpack slung over one shoulder, her head down. She practically threw herself into the passenger seat and pulled the door shut with a violent slam.

"Drive, Dad," she breathed out, her chest heaving. "Please, just drive."

David pulled out into traffic, his eyes cutting to the rearview mirror. "What happened, Mia? Did someone say something to you?"

"Everyone is talking about it," Mia cried, her tears finally overflowing. "Chloe’s mom told her she isn't allowed to come over to Aunt Sarah's house because Mom posted on Facebook that you're keeping us hostage! People at school are asking me if you're taking drugs, Dad! They're saying Mom is the victim!"

David felt an overwhelming wave of fury boil in his chest. Elena was using their daughter’s social life as a collateral casualty to win public sympathy.

"Listen to me, Mia," David said, pulling the truck over to the side of a quiet residential street and turning to face her. "People in this town only know the story your mother is telling them right now. They haven't seen the truth. They don't know what you went through in that house when I wasn't there."

"I want to tell them!" Mia sobbed. "I want to tell everyone what she did! How she screamed at Leo when he wouldn't sleep! How she threw things at me! Why does everyone believe her just because she posts pretty pictures on Instagram?"

"Because it’s easier for people to believe a lie than to accept that someone they know is capable of hurting their own children," David said gently, wiping a tear from Mia’s cheek. "You don't need to fight this battle on Facebook, Mia. We are going to fight it where it actually counts—in front of the judge."

His phone buzzed in the cup holder. It was a text message from Marcus Vance: The emergency hearing is set for Monday at 9:00 AM. Judge Reyes granted the temporary protective order until the hearing. But Elena just filed a motion demanding an immediate psychological evaluation of MIA, claiming you have brainwashed her.

David stared at the screen, his blood running cold. Elena was willing to put their fourteen-year-old daughter through the trauma of a high-pressure court psychiatric evaluation just to discredit her testimony.

"What is it, Dad?" Mia asked, noticing the sudden change in his expression.

"Nothing you need to worry about," David lied smoothly, locking his phone screen. "Tonight, we are turning off all social media. We’re going to Aunt Sarah’s, we’re making homemade pizza, and we’re going to play board games with Leo."

Mia looked at him, her tear-filled eyes searching his face for reassurance. "Do you really think we can win this, Dad?"

"It’s not about winning or losing, Mia," David said, starting the engine again. "It’s about making sure you and Leo never have to live in fear again. And I promise you, as long as I have breath in my body, nobody is going to force you back into that house."

As they drove away, David saw a familiar white sedan parked three blocks down the street, its tinted windows rolled up, sitting quietly in the shade of an oak tree.

It was Elena’s car. She was watching them.
