Chapter 6 - A New Ledger

Six months later.

The autumn air over the Amalfi Coast of Italy was warm, sweet with the scent of blooming lemons and the salty breeze of the Mediterranean Sea.

On the terrace of a magnificent, historic villa overlooking the cliffside, Evelyn Carter sat at a white wrought-iron table, a laptop open in front of her. She was dressed in a beautiful, flowing emerald silk dress, her hair styled in soft waves. She wore her glasses, but her eyes were bright, full of peace and a quiet, radiant happiness.

On the screen was a newly structured financial ledger.

This ledger didn't contain expense codes for blood-stained coats or anonymous payments to crooked judges. Instead, it was a clean, legitimate balance sheet for the Bellini-Carter Foundation—a multi-million-dollar philanthropic organization dedicated to funding children's hospitals and educational programs across Europe and America.

Dante Bellini had officially retired from the underworld.

The Valettis were gone, the corrupt captains neutralized, and the Bellini empire had been completely transformed into a legitimate, clean corporate powerhouse.

A shadow fell over the table.

Evelyn looked up to see Dante walking onto the terrace. He had discarded his formal black suits for a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed, incredibly handsome, and truly at ease. The hard, defensive lines of his face had softened, replaced by a deep, quiet contentment. He held two glasses of red wine.

"Are you still working, my love?" Dante smiled, placing a glass beside her and sitting in the chair next to hers.

"Just finalizing the quarterly grants for the new orphanage in Rome," Evelyn said, closing the laptop and leaning back in her chair. "It’s clean, Dante. Every single euro is accounted for."

"I know," Dante said, reaching across the table and taking her hand, his tattooed fingers wrapping around hers with a gentle, protective warmth. On her ring finger, a magnificent emerald ring caught the Mediterranean sun. "You’ve made me a respectable man, Evelyn."

"You were always respectable, Dante," she whispered, looking into his pale blue eyes, which were now filled with a warm, unconditional love. "You just needed a better accountant."

Dante laughed, a rich, warm sound that echoed over the cliffs. He pulled her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently.

"We have a guest arriving tonight," Dante said. "Marcus and Dominic are bringing the yacht around. They want to celebrate our first anniversary."

"I’d like that," Evelyn smiled, standing up and walking to the edge of the terrace railing, looking out over the deep blue waters.

Dante stood up and walked over behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, his hands joining hers over her stomach.

For years, they had lived in a world of shadows, of secrets, and of a constant, terrifying battle for control. But they had survived the storm. They had built a new life, not on fear or coercion, but on a love that had proven itself to be the most powerful force in their world.

"No more running, Evelyn," Dante whispered, kissing her temple.

"No more running," she agreed, turning in his arms to kiss him as the sun began to set, painting the Italian sky in a beautiful, victorious golden light. "We are exactly where we belong."
