Chapter 6 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The Coronado beach house sat on a quiet, windswept point overlooking the crash of the Pacific surf. It was a beautiful, rustic two-story craftsman house built in the 1930s, featuring dark redwood timber, wrap-around porches, and memories of my late wife Grace’s childhood.
I hadn't set foot inside the house in over two years. Walking through the front door felt like stepping into a sanctuary that had been breached by a silent plague.
Caleb and two of his technical specialists entered behind me, carrying thermal scanners and signal detectors.
"Why would Colin hide a hard drive here?" I asked, watching Caleb sweep the living room fireplace with an infrared device. "He didn't even have a key to this property."
"He didn't need a key," Caleb replied, his scanner chirping softly as he moved toward the formal dining room. "Vanessa had a master key to all your properties. Three months ago, while you were on a business trip to Seattle, Vanessa’s phone GPS showed her spending four hours here late at night. She told you she was dropping off some old lawn furniture."
I gritted my teeth, watching Caleb’s team pull up the edge of a thick Persian rug near the built-in mahogany bookcases.
"Here," the specialist said, holding a thermal reader over the corner of the hardwood floor. "There's a hollow heat differential beneath the floorboards. Someone used an electric saw on the joists recently."
I knelt beside the specialist. Using a small crowbar, Caleb carefully pried up a section of the polished redwood flooring.
Beneath the wood, resting in a small, fireproof steel lockbox nestled between the floor joists, lay a sleek, silver encrypted hard drive alongside four small, sealed glass vials filled with the same clear liquid Colin had brought to my kitchen.
"Jackpot," Caleb breathed, carefully lifting the steel box out of the recess.
"Wait," I said, pointing to a small leather-bound notebook tucked underneath the hard drive. "What’s that?"
I reached into the cavity and pulled out the small journal. I flipped open the first page. The neat, precise handwriting belonged to Vanessa.
I began reading the dates, and with every sentence, my skin crawled.
March 14th: David is fully convinced Nora’s tantrums are psychological. First dose administered in milk. Child was hysterical for three hours. Recorded two good clips for David.
April 2nd: Colin secured three more vials of the formula. Need to increase dosage slightly before the Denver trip. David is resisting the sale of Coronado, but if Nora’s episodes require institutionalization, he will succumb.
May 10th: Grace’s old estate records review. Found the original trust deed. David’s signature as sole trustee is the only obstacle. Once he signs the conservatorship, Colin’s contact at the bank will wire the initial $2 million deposit to our Cayman account.
It was a cold, methodical diary of abuse. A complete, hand-written confession detailing every dose, every video, every phone call, and every step of the financial conspiracy.
"This isn't digital evidence," I whispered, holding the book up to Caleb, my voice trembling with raw triumph. "This is Vanessa's hand-written journal. A defense attorney can't argue this was an illegal wiretap!"
"This diary locks the iron cage around her neck forever," Caleb smiled broadly. "She signed her own life sentence in her own handwriting."
