CHAPTER 1 – PART 2: THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 1 – PART 2: THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Marcus Vale sat alone in his home office.

The only sound in the room was the soft hum of his laptop.

And the video playing on repeat.

He had already watched it five times.

Now it felt like the screen was burning into him.

Not because of what he saw—

but because of what it meant.

The footage began like any other evening in a wealthy household.

The kitchen was clean.

Warm light from the ceiling softened everything it touched.

Lily stood near the counter, small and quiet, her hands folded in front of her like she was trying to take up less space in the world.

Cassandra entered the frame a few seconds later.

Perfect posture.

Calm steps.

A smile that never reached her eyes.

Marcus paused the video.

He studied her face.

Even frozen on a screen, it felt rehearsed.

Like a performance she had practiced too many times.

He pressed play again.

Cassandra spoke.

Lily didn’t respond immediately.

There was a delay.

A hesitation that lasted just a second too long.

Then Lily moved.

Not toward Cassandra.

But away.

A small step backward.

Almost invisible.

But Marcus saw it.

He replayed that moment.

Again.

And again.

Then came the part that made everything inside him go cold.

Cassandra crouched slightly to Lily’s level.

Her voice dropped.

Soft.

Controlled.

The kind of voice adults use when they believe no one else is listening.

Lily’s shoulders tensed.

Her fingers curled tighter.

Marcus leaned closer to the screen.

Trying to understand.

Trying to believe there was another explanation.

But there wasn’t.

He stopped the video.

His hand trembled as it hovered over the keyboard.

For a long time, he didn’t move.

Then he whispered into the empty room:

“What did you do to her?”

Marcus replayed the footage again—but this time, he watched only Lily.

Not Cassandra.

Lily.

Every micro-expression.

Every shift in posture.

Every silent reaction.

And suddenly, he saw it.

Not one moment.

A pattern.

Fear didn’t appear all at once.

It built itself quietly.

Like cracks in glass.

Marcus closed the laptop.

He stood up too quickly.

His chair scraped against the floor.

He walked to the window and looked out at the estate grounds.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

That was the problem.

Danger rarely announces itself.

It blends in.

The next morning, Cassandra acted exactly the same as always.

She made breakfast.

She smiled when Marcus entered the room.

She kissed Lily’s forehead gently before school.

“Have a beautiful day, sweetheart,” she said.

Lily didn’t smile back.

She just nodded.

Marcus watched everything.

Silently.

Carefully.

Now every gesture had weight.

Every word had meaning.

Even silence felt suspicious.

After they left the room, Marcus checked the security system again.

He focused on timestamps.

Patterns.

Repeated interactions.

He wasn’t looking for a single moment anymore.

He was looking for truth.

And truth, once seen, cannot be unseen.

That afternoon, Marcus called someone he trusted.

Not a lawyer.

Not a business partner.

Someone from his private security team.

“I need a full audit of every camera file,” Marcus said.

“No gaps. No delays. No missing minutes.”

There was a pause on the other end.

“This is serious?”

Marcus looked at the frozen frame of Lily on his screen.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“It is.”

That night, Cassandra returned home earlier than usual.

She noticed the change immediately.

Marcus wasn’t in the living room.

The house felt different.

Heavier.

Like something unseen had shifted.

“Marcus?” she called softly.

No answer.

She walked through the hallway.

Still no response.

Then she saw him.

Standing in front of the fireplace.

Holding his phone.

Watching her.

Cassandra smiled.

A little slower this time.

“Long day?” she asked gently.

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he unlocked his phone.

Turned the screen toward her.

And pressed play.

The video began.

For the first time, Cassandra’s smile didn’t look perfect.

It looked uncertain.

“What is this?” she asked.

Marcus stepped forward.

“I think you know,” he said.

Her expression tightened.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Enough for Marcus to notice.

Enough for him to understand—

he wasn’t imagining things.

Cassandra took a small breath.

Then spoke carefully.

“That’s not what you think it is.”

Marcus didn’t blink.

“I didn’t tell you what I think it is.”

A silence followed.

A dangerous one.

The kind that happens right before everything breaks.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything:

“I already sent it to a secure backup.”

Cassandra’s face shifted.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But Marcus saw it.

And in that moment—

he knew the truth had already left the house.

And somewhere deep inside him,

a decision had already been made.

Not about revenge.

Not about anger.

But about protection.

May you like

Because whatever Cassandra really was—

Marcus would not let her near Lily again.
