Chapter 5 - Night of the Wolf

The darkness that enveloped the estate was absolute. The thunder outside rumbled furiously, followed by the high-pitched whine of the mansion's backup generator trying—and failing—to kick in.
"The main power grid was cut from the outside," Nathan said instantly, his voice dropping into full tactical mode. He pulled a compact 9mm pistol from a hidden drawer beneath his desk and racked the slide with a crisp clack. "The generator lines were severed."
"The boys," I said immediately, turning toward the door.
"Stay behind me," Nathan commanded, pulling a small, high-powered tactical flashlight from his pocket and clicking it on.
We moved quickly through the pitch-black corridors. The grand mansion, once merely imposing, now felt terrifying. Every shadow looked like a lurking predator; every creak of the house settling sounded like approaching footsteps.
When we reached the top of the east wing staircase, I noticed a faint glow coming from the boys' playroom.
"Nathan, look," I whispered.
Through the doorway, three figures dressed in black tactical gear were standing around the boys' beds. One of them was holding a large syringe filled with a clear liquid, while another was preparing a heavy transport bag.
They weren't just poisoning the boys anymore—they were moving to eliminate them.
"Get down!" Nathan barked.
He raised his weapon and fired two rapid shots. The loud bang echoed deafeningly in the narrow hallway. One of the intruders dropped to the floor with a heavy thud, while the other two immediately drew suppressed sidearms and returned fire, shattering the glass artwork along the corridor.
Nathan pulled me behind a thick marble pillar as drywall dust rained down upon us.
"Jacob! Jonah!" I screamed over the gunfire.
"Emily, take my backup piece," Nathan ordered, reaching into his ankle holster and shoving a small revolver into my hands. "Can you use this?"
"I know how to pull a trigger!" I said, my hands shaking as I gripped the cold steel.
"Cover the back stairs," Nathan said, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "I'm clearing the room."
Nathan broke cover with terrifying speed. He flanked the doorway, firing three quick rounds with lethal precision. Shouts and heavy body falls echoed from inside the room.
I turned toward the rear fire exit stairwell, my flashlight beam cutting through the dust-filled darkness. Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed my hair from behind, jerking my head back with violent force.
My flashlight dropped, tumbling across the floor.
"Stupid, nosey bitch," a voice snarled in my ear. It was Dr. Malcolm Reeves. He smelled of alcohol and cheap cologne, his face twisted in a manic, desperate grimace. In his right hand, he held a scalpel aimed directly at my throat. "You ruined everything! Ten million dollars! That's what Vance promised me once the boys were out of the way and Nathan lost his mind to grief!"
"It was Vance..." I gasped, choking against his grip as I fought for air.
"Of course it was Vance!" Reeves laughed insanely. "He controlled the estate's trusts! With the heirs dead and Nathan declared mentally unfit by my medical reports, Vance takes complete control of the empire!"
Reeves raised the scalpel, preparing to strike.
I didn't try to pull away. Instead, remembering everything I had learned living in the rough parts of Boston, I drove my heavy heel down onto his instep with all my weight.
Reeves shrieked in pain, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second.
I spun around, raised the small revolver Nathan had given me, and drove the barrel hard into Reeves’ ribs.
"Stay in your lane, Doctor," I growled.
I pulled the trigger.
The gunshot echoed in the small space. Reeves let out a gasping groan, dropping the scalpel as he collapsed onto the carpet, clutching his side.
Nathan burst around the corner, his weapon raised, his face frantic. When he saw me standing over the bleeding doctor, gun in hand, he stopped dead in his tracks.
"Emily!" Nathan rushed over, grabbing my shoulders and inspecting me frantically. "Are you hit? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," I breathed, my whole body trembling as adrenaline washed through me. "It was Arthur Vance. He paid Reeves. They wanted to destroy you through your children."
Nathan looked down at the writhing, crying doctor on the floor, then back at me. Without a word, he pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly against his chest.
"They're safe," Nathan whispered into my hair, his voice choked with emotion. "The boys are safe. You protected them."

"We need to find Vance," I said, leaning back to look at him. "Before he realizes the hit failed."
Nathan’s face hardened into stone. "Oh, he isn't getting away. Tonight, this family cleans house."
