Chapter 3 - The Deposition

Three weeks later, I sat in a secure conference room at the federal courthouse downtown.
I was nine months pregnant now, moving with slow, deliberate caution, but my mind was sharper and more focused than it had been in years. Across the long mahogany table sat Daniel’s defense attorney—a high-priced corporate lawyer from the city who looked entirely out of his depth. Beside him sat Daniel.
He looked different. The arrogant swagger, the casual cruelty, the smug confidence that had defined him during our marriage were entirely gone. His hair was unkempt, his orange jumpsuit hung loosely on his frame, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. When he looked at me, his gaze wasn't filled with anger; it was sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
He still couldn't fathom how the quiet, compliant wife he had tried to bury in the backyard was actually a federal detective who had outsmarted him at every turn.
"Detective Emily Carter," the prosecutor announced formally, standing at the head of the table. "Please state your badge number and agency for the record."
I spoke clearly, my voice echoing off the paneled walls. "Detective Emily Carter, Badge Number 4821, Special Investigations Division."
Daniel flinched at the sound of my official title. It was the first time he had heard me speak it in a professional context.
"Detective Carter, directing your attention to the night of October 14th," the prosecutor began, holding up a transparent evidence bag containing the backup phone. "Can you describe for the court the events leading up to your placement in the trench behind your residence?"
For the next two hours, I laid out the timeline with clinical precision. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't show emotion. I simply presented the facts: the dinner table confrontation, the escalation of demands, the physical coercion, the deliberate and methodical actions of Daniel, his mother, and his sister as they forced me into the ground.
When the prosecutor played the audio recording, the room fell into a dead silence.
Hearing Daniel's voice booming through the speakers—calmly lecturing me on obedience while shoveling dirt over my pregnant body—sent a cold shiver through the room. Several jurors in the mock setup—and the defense attorney himself—looked visibly nauseated.
Daniel buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking slightly. Not from remorse, I knew, but from the realization that his entire fabricated world of superiority had been permanently shattered.
"Your witness," the prosecutor said, sitting down.
The defense attorney stood up, sweating profusely, looking desperately at his client for guidance. "Detective... um, Mrs. Carter. Isn't it true that you deliberately provoked Mr. Carter by refusing to follow household rules?"
I looked directly at the attorney, then shifted my gaze to Daniel.
"Mr. Carter did not have 'household rules,'" I said steadily. "He had a pattern of criminal coercion, intimidation, and abuse designed to strip victims of their autonomy. My refusal to submit to illegal control was part of my lawful duties as an undercover investigator gathering evidence of an ongoing criminal enterprise."

The attorney stammered, looking for a loophole that didn't exist. "Nothing further, Your Honor."
As I stepped down from the witness stand and walked back to my seat, Daniel raised his head. His eyes met mine one last time. There was no threat left in them. Just a hollow, empty shell of a man who had finally learned the hard way what happens when you underestimate a woman who knows her own strength.
