Chapter 8 - Shadows Clearing

The trial of Marcus Vance lasted less than three days.

With the encrypted digital ledgers, the toxicological evidence, and the sworn testimony of several high-ranking syndicate captains who had turned state’s evidence, Marcus’s defense collapsed before it even began. Handed over to federal authorities with airtight documentation of attempted murder, corporate fraud, and racketeering, Marcus was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. The empire he had tried to steal was dismantled, its illicit assets quietly liquidated and funneled into legitimate philanthropic trusts managed by a board overseen jointly by Luca and Elena.

The underworld whispered about the sudden collapse of the Costello syndicate, wondering what had happened to the legendary crime lord behind the iron gates. Some rumors claimed Luca had retired to a private island; others whispered that he had been eliminated in an internal coup.

None of them knew the truth: Luca Costello hadn't vanished. He had simply outgrown the dark.

Back at the estate, the transition into a normal life brought its own quiet comedies. On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Maya decided that Luca’s study needed redecorating.

"The books are too boring, Luca," Maya announced, marching into the study with a stack of brightly colored comic books and a box of crayons. "A house needs color. My room is pink and yellow. Your room is just... old wood."

Luca, sitting at his desk reviewing architectural blueprints for the estate's new community youth center, looked up over his reading glasses with mock severity.

"Old wood built this empire, young lady," Luca said, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, the empire is retired," Maya retorted with a cheeky grin, climbing uninvited onto his lap—a feat that would have been impossible six months ago when he was confined to his wheelchair. Now, his strong arms easily caught her, lifting her up as she dumped her comic books right across his important documents. "Now you're just my dad, which means you have to read me a story."

Luca froze slightly at the word dad. Though Elena and he had talked about it, hearing it said so casually, so naturally, by the child who had shattered his isolation sent a warm, heavy wave crashing over his heart.

He looked over Maya's head toward the doorway, where Elena stood leaning against the archway, a soft, knowing smile playing on her lips.

"A story," Luca murmured, wrapping his arms around Maya and pulling her close. "Well... once upon a time, there was a man who lived in a very big house with very high walls, and he thought he knew everything about the world..."

"Did he have a dragon?" Maya interrupted eagerly.

"No," Luca smiled, resting his chin on her head. "He had something much better. He had a little girl who came through the hedge and taught him how to walk again."
