Chapter 10 - The Horizon Beyond the Gate

The morning sun broke over the Alpine peaks like a jagged sheet of gold leaf, burning away the mist and setting the frozen snowfields ablaze with brilliant, blinding light.

Damon stood on the front porch of the chalet, a steaming mug of black coffee in his hand. The air was crisp, clean, and so cold it stung the lungs with every breath. There were no armed guards at the perimeter. No gates to lock. No federated servers tracking his every movement across three continents.

The world outside was vast, chaotic, and entirely uncontrolled. And for the first time in his thirty-nine years, Damon Castellano wouldn't have had it any other way.

The heavy oak door creaked open behind him. Lily ran out onto the porch in her red winter coat, laughing as she chased a flurry of powdery snow kicked up by the wind. Right beside her, trotting with a surprising, youthful bounce in his step despite his gray muzzle, was the Warden.

The dog stopped at the edge of the porch, looked back at Damon, and let out a short, sharp bark—not a command, not a warning, but a greeting.

Elena stepped out beside Damon, slipping her hand into the pocket of his coat, her fingers locking securely with his.

"Ready?" she asked, looking out over the endless expanse of white peaks stretching toward the horizon.

Damon took a final sip of his coffee, set the mug down on the wooden railing, and squeezed her hand back.

"Let's see what’s over the ridge," Damon said.

With Lily leading the way and the Warden trotting faithfully at her side, they stepped off the porch and walked out into the bright, unwritten morning, leaving the shadows of the past buried deep beneath the snow.
