Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Three days later, the rain finally cleared over the lush, rolling hills of Sewickley Heights, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn afternoon.

Inside the East Wing of the Moretti estate, Hannah stood near the French doors of a magnificent, sunlit suite.

The room was larger than her entire previous apartment. It featured a king-sized canopy bed draped in white Italian silk, a private marble bathroom with a clawfoot soaking tub, a fireplace, and a walk-in closet filled with brand-new, designer clothing in her exact size—dresses, coats, cashmere sweaters, and soft leather shoes.

Down the hall, in a private medical suite outfitted with state-of-the-art dialysis equipment and two full-time private nurses, Noah was resting comfortably, playing video games on a custom entertainment system Gabriel had installed for him.

It was a fairytale. But to Hannah, it felt like a gilded cage.

She looked at her reflection in the full-length mirror. She was no longer wearing her faded gray maid’s uniform. She wore a soft cream-colored sweater and dark trousers. Her hair was clean, shiny, and fell in soft waves over her shoulders. She looked healthy, rested, and cared for.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

“Come in,” Hannah said softly.

The door opened, and Gabriel stepped inside. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing only a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate tattoo of a crest on his right inner arm.

He carried a silver tray with two cups of steaming tea.

“How is Noah feeling today?” Gabriel asked, setting the tray on a small table near the window.

“The doctors say his blood numbers are stabilizing,” Hannah said, walking over to him. “Dr. Harrison thinks he might be ready for a kidney match evaluation by next month.”

“Good,” Gabriel nodded, handing her a fine porcelain teacup.

Hannah accepted the cup, but her eyes remained fixed on his face. “Gabriel... we need to talk.”

Gabriel leaned back against the window frame, taking a slow sip of his tea. “About what?”

“About this,” Hannah gestured around the luxurious room. “About the clothes, the private medical wing, the security guards watching my door every second. I grateful—more grateful than words can say for what you did for Noah. But I can’t live like a princess in your house while pretending I belong here.”

Gabriel set his teacup down with a soft click. His gray eyes intensified as he looked at her.

“You do belong here, Hannah.”

“As what?” Hannah challenged gently, stepping closer to him. “Your maid? Your charity case? Or... the vulnerability your enemies are trying to kill?”

Gabriel’s expression darkened slightly. He took a step toward her, closing the distance between them until Hannah could smell the clean scent of cedar and mint on his skin.

“You are not a charity case,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling timbre that thrilled her core. “And you are certainly not just a maid.”

“Then what am I to you, Gabriel?” Hannah whispered, her breath hitching as he raised his hand and gently cupped her cheek.

His thumb brushed over her lower lip—a slow, reverent touch that sent a wave of heat straight to her toes.

“For five years, this house was a tomb,” Gabriel confessed softly, his eyes searching hers with raw, unfiltered intensity. “I lived in darkness because I believed I didn't deserve light. Then one night, a sick girl stumbled into my bed by accident. And for the first time in five years, I woke up and wanted to live again.”

Hannah’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. “Gabriel...”

“I didn't bring you here to make you a prisoner, Hannah,” he murmured, his face leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. “I brought you here because I cannot breathe when you are not under my roof.”

Before Hannah could answer, the heavy alarm chimes of the estate suddenly echoed through the hallway.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

The bright sunlight outside the French doors was instantly obscured as heavy steel security shutters began to descend over the glass windows.

The radio on Gabriel’s belt crackled with frantic static.

“BOSS!” Marco’s panicked voice blasted through the speaker. “POWER IS CUT AT THE MAIN GATE! VEHICLES BREACHING THE SOUTH DRIVEWAY! IT’S CASTELLO!”
