Chapter 9 - The Reunion in the Dark

Silence hung in the cold underground cellar for a long, agonizing second.

Then, from the shadows at the bottom of the stone stairs, a small, fragile voice wavered in the darkness.

“...Papa?”

Alessandro dropped his weapon. He didn't care about tactical protocol; he didn't care about anything else in the universe. He practically tumbled down the steep stone steps, hitting the cold dirt floor of the hidden cellar.

A single dim lightbulb hung from a wire overhead, casting long shadows across stone walls covered in childish chalk drawings—drawings of sunflowers, a large house, and a tall man holding a little girl's hand.

Sitting on a narrow cot in the corner was a thin, frail woman with long, dark hair, wearing a faded gray blanket. She was clutching a nine-year-old girl close to her chest.

Isabella.

Her face was pale and tired, but her dark eyes—the same eyes Alessandro had fallen in love with fifteen years ago—were wide with shock and disbelieving tears.

And beside her was Arya. She was no longer six years old. She had grown taller, her hair longer, but her face... her sweet, beautiful face was unmistakably his daughter’s.

“Alessandro?” Isabella whispered, her voice cracking as if she hadn't used her vocal cords in years. She reached out a thin, trembling hand, afraid he was just another cruel hallucination brought on by three years of captivity. “Is it really you?”

Alessandro collapsed onto his knees beside the cot, tears streaming down his face without restraint. He wrapped his massive arms around both of them, pulling them into a fierce, desperate embrace that shook his entire body.

“It’s me... it’s me, my loves,” Alessandro sobbed, burying his face in Isabella’s neck, holding his daughter so tightly he could feel her rapid heartbeat. “I found you... God forgive me, I finally found you!”

Arya wrapped her thin arms around her father’s neck, bursting into loud, hysterical tears. “Papa! You came! Mama told me you would come! She said you were searching for us!”

“I never stopped looking, baby,” Alessandro cried, kissing Arya’s forehead over and over again. “I’m so sorry... I’m so sorry it took me so long!”

Isabella held Alessandro’s head in her hands, weeping as she pressed her lips to his forehead, his cheeks, his lips. “We prayed every night, Alessandro... we knew you wouldn't leave us...”

For almost an hour, time ceased to exist in that subterranean room. Alessandro wrapped them in warm tactical coats, lifted Arya into his broad arms, and helped Isabella stand up on her weak, underused legs.

When they emerged from the dark cellar into the foggy afternoon light above, Victor Hale and the Moretti guards stood in complete, respectful silence, many of them brushing away tears as they watched their leader walk out of the cottage carrying his daughter, his wife leaning safely against his side.

The medical team Alessandro had summoned arrived shortly after. Isabella and Arya were carefully examined inside a mobile clinic SUV. They were malnourished and pale, but miraculously, Lorenzo Valenti had kept them physically unharmed, using them strictly as an ultimate insurance policy he hoped never to use.

As the convoy prepared to head back to Long Island, Isabella looked out the window at the passing trees, clutching Alessandro’s hand as if she would die if she let go.

“Alessandro,” Isabella whispered softly, her voice still weak. “Where are we going?”

Alessandro looked at his wife, then at little Arya, who was already fast asleep on the soft leather seat, wrapped in a fleece blanket.

“We’re going home, Isabella,” Alessandro said quietly. “To the mansion. It’s time to open the windows and let the light back in.”
