Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

At 8:00 p.m., the front door of my penthouse chimed. I didn't wait for the concierge to announce the visitor; I already knew who was coming. My mother possessed private access codes to all Vance properties, a privilege she exercised whenever she felt her control slipping.
The double doors swung open, and Victoria Vance swept into the foyer, wrapped in a floor-length mink coat over an emerald green silk gown. Behind her stood two of our family’s senior corporate attorneys and my younger brother, Harrison, who looked thoroughly miserable to be dragged into the fray.
"Julian Vance!" my mother’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding, the tone that had governed the boardrooms of Vance Enterprises for three decades. "Have you completely lost your mind? The Cartwrights are waiting at the conservatory! The press is—"
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Her eyes swept past me, landing directly on Mara, who stood like an immovable shield in front of the sofa. Then, Victoria’s gaze shifted down to the four boys sitting side-by-side, four identical carbon copies of her eldest son at six years old.
The color drained from my mother’s face so fast it looked as though she had seen a ghost. The emerald brooch on her lapel caught the light, trembling slightly as her composure cracked for the very first time in her life.
"Victoria," I said, stepping into her line of sight, blocking her view of my sons. "Welcome. You're just in time for the truth."
"Julian..." she stammered, her voice losing its usual iron authority. "What... what is the meaning of this? Who brought these people here?"
"'These people' are my sons, Mother," I said, stepping closer to her, towering over her five-foot-four frame. "And the woman you tried to destroy six years ago."
One of the lawyers, Arthur Vance, stepped forward, clearing his throat nervously. "Julian, please, let us handle this quietly. The engagement announcement with Brielle can be postponed, but we need to control the media exposure immediately. A scandal of this magnitude—"
"Shut your mouth, Arthur," I snapped, turning a glare on him that made the senior partner take a step backward. "If you take one more step into my home, I will have security throw you out on the street, and I will personally file disbarment proceedings against you for assisting in document forgery six years ago."
Arthur gasped, looking frantically at my mother.
Victoria recovered her posture, pulling her coat tighter around her shoulders, her eyes hardening back into stone. "Julian, don't be naive. You were twenty-five years old! You were building a legacy! A server from an off-grid diner had no place in the Vance family. I did what any mother who cares about her family’s future would do."
"You bought a fake signature!" I roared, the anger I had suppressed for six years finally exploding through the penthouse. "You forged a non-disclosure agreement! You told me she abandoned me while I was comatose in a London hospital! You let my sons sleep in a Queens shelter while you spent millions on galas and horses!"
"Julian, keep your voice down!" she hissed, glaring past me at the boys, who were now huddled together, Mason hiding his face behind Milo’s shoulder. "You don't understand the business! The Cartwright merger secures our holdings in Europe! If this leaks out, the stock drops thirty percent by morning!"
"Let it drop to zero," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.
I reached into my pocket, pulled out the velvet ring box containing the three-carat diamond ring meant for Brielle Cartwright, and tossed it unceremoniously into my mother’s hands.
"The engagement is over," I declared. "My partnership with Vance Enterprises is over. As of this second, I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer."
May you like
"You can't do that!" Victoria gasped, her eyes wide with genuine panic. "The board will never accept Harrison as CEO! You are the face of the company!"
"Then watch the company fall," I replied, pointing toward the open front door. "Get out of my house, Victoria. Before I call the police and have you arrested for criminal fraud and harassment."
