Chapter 5 - The Audit Trail

Harrison stepped closer to the podium, his posture relaxed, his gaze locked onto his uncle with icy amusement.
“You spent the last three years digging through my personal expense reports, Uncle Richard, hoping to find a flaw,” Harrison said smoothly, his voice echoing off the high-vaulted ceiling. “You hired private investigators, audited subsidiary accounts in Zurich, and even bribed a mid-level manager in my logistics division to flag irregularities.”
Richard’s confident sneer faltered for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about incompetence,” Harrison replied, turning his back on his uncle and walking slowly toward the massive digital display screen at the front of the stage. He tapped his smartphone against the media dock, and the screen flashed to life.
Instead of the contractor invoices Richard had threatened to display, the screen illuminated a complex, highly detailed forensic accounting audit of Vance Global’s European subsidiaries.
Gasps erupted through the amphitheater rows. Several board members instantly leaned forward, their faces turning pale.
“Let’s talk about Section 8 of the corporate charter, Richard,” Harrison said casually, pointing to a highlighted column of figures on the screen. “The clause stating that any executive who misappropriate company funds or engages in corporate espionage forfeits their voting shares immediately.”
Richard slammed his hands onto the podium, his face flushing dark purple. “This is a diversion! Those accounts are clean! You’re fabricating data to save your own skin!”
“Am I?” Harrison raised an eyebrow. “Victoria, pull up file designation Omega-Seven.”
Victoria stepped up to a secondary terminal on the stage and tapped her screen. Instantly, bank transfer logs, offshore shell company registries in the Cayman Islands, and signed wire authorizations appeared on the main display—all bearing the electronic signature and personal routing numbers of Richard Vance.
“Over the last four years,” Harrison continued, his voice dropping into a chilling, methodical rhythm, “while I was building this company into a global titan, my own uncle was systematically bleeding our European logistics division dry, funneling twelve million dollars into private accounts through dummy corporations registered in the Bahamas.”
The auditorium erupted into absolute chaos. Shouts of outrage bounced off the walls. Board members stood up from their seats, glaring across the rows at a sweating, trembling Richard Vance.
“It’s a forgery!” Richard screamed, his voice cracking with panic as he pointed a shaking finger at his nephew. “He hacked those accounts! He’s framing me because he knows he lost the vote!”
“You’re welcome to call the federal authorities and request an independent forensic audit right now, Richard,” Harrison said softly, turning to face him with dead-eyed precision. “Though I should warn you, the FBI financial crimes division is already reviewing the data packets I transmitted to them at eight-fifteen this morning.”
Richard froze. All the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like an old, broken man standing among the ruins of his own greed. He slowly lowered his hands, gripped the edges of the podium to keep from collapsing, and whispered, “You knew... you knew about the embezzlement the entire time.”
“I didn't just know, Richard,” Harrison said quietly, stepping right up to his uncle’s ear. “I was letting you build a big enough mountain of evidence so that when you finally tried to stab me in the back, the avalanche would bury you so deep you’d never crawl out.”
Harrison stepped back, turned to face the stunned board of directors, and adjusted his cuffs with effortless composure.
“Now,” Harrison announced, his voice ringing out across the silent room. “Does anyone else have any concerns regarding my fiscal responsibility, my hiring practices, or my charitable investments in the borough of Queens?”
Absolute silence. Not a single hand went up. Not a single voice dared speak.
“The vote is unanimous,” Victoria announced swiftly into her mic, taking control of the room with iron efficiency. “Current leadership remains fully intact. Meeting adjourned.”

As the board members began scrambling toward the exits like rats fleeing a sinking ship, Richard Vance was escorted out of the auditorium by two federal agents who had materialized quietly at the back doors.
Harrison stood alone on the stage, the glittering Manhattan skyline framing his silhouette through the floor-to-ceiling windows. He slowly turned his head and looked up into the front row of the amphitheater, where Savannah was standing alone, staring at him with wide, breathless eyes.
