Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

When I returned home at noon, the battlefield had shifted.
As my Navigator pulled up the driveway, I saw two local Newton police cruisers parked out front, their blue lights flashing quietly against the damp afternoon sky.
I stepped out of the car, adjusting my coat, and walked briskly toward the front porch.
Lauren was standing on the lawn, screaming at two uniformed officers while holding Eli tightly against her hip. She was still wearing my guest robe, her hair wild, her face tear-streaked and frantic.
"You can't do this! I live here! My son lives here!" she shrieked, pointing an angry finger at Officer Higgins, a veteran cop I knew from neighborhood association meetings. "Nathan Whitmore is my partner! He owns this house!"
"Ma'am, calm down," Officer Higgins said tiredly. "The property title is registered under the Rachel Vance-Whitmore Irrevocable Trust. Mr. Whitmore does not hold ownership title to this residence. Mrs. Whitmore has filed an emergency trespass order."
"Rachel!" Lauren screamed as she saw me approaching. She charged toward me, but the second officer immediately stepped in her path, catching her by the arm. "You bitch! What did you do to Nathan? He’s not answering his phone! His office said he was taken out by federal agents!"
I stopped three feet away from her, completely calm.
"Nathan is currently assisting the Securities and Exchange Commission with their inquiries," I said smoothly. "And as for you, Lauren... you have fifteen minutes to gather your personal belongings from the guest house and leave my property."
"I’m not going anywhere!" Lauren yelled, her voice screeching into the quiet neighborhood air. "I have a child! Eli is Nathan’s son! He has a right to be here!"
"Eli is an innocent child who deserves a far better mother than you," I replied coldly. "If you are not off my property in fifteen minutes, I will press formal grand larceny charges for the theft of the emerald bracelet, along with criminal trespass. You will spend the night in the Middlesex County House of Correction, and Child Protective Services will take custody of Eli."
Lauren froze. The threat of CPS hit her like a bucket of ice water. Her posture crumbled, the arrogance vanishing, replaced by pure, desperate terror.
"You... you wouldn't," she whispered.
"Try me," I said. "Fourteen minutes."
She turned and sprinted toward the guest house, dragging Eli behind her, crying hysterically.
Officer Higgins walked over to me, nodding respectfully. "Are you alright, Mrs. Whitmore? We heard about your hospital stay."
"I’m recovering well, Officer. Thank you for your assistance," I said softly.
"We’ll make sure she leaves the premises without further incident," he said. "And Mrs. Whitmore? A private investigator dropped off a package for you about twenty minutes ago. It’s on your front porch."
My heart gave a sudden, hard thud. The mystery sender.
I walked up the porch steps and picked up a thick manila envelope sitting on the bench. I walked inside, locked the door, and took it straight into my study.
I sliced the envelope open with a brass letter opener. Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten letter.
Rachel,
If you are reading this, Nathan has already been detained. You were magnificent in that boardroom.
The flash drive contains the full forensic accounting files of Nathan’s offshore accounts, including the wire logs proving that Lauren Miller was an active co-conspirator in the embezzlement scheme, not just a passive beneficiary. She helped him forge the client authorization signatures.
There is one more thing you need to know. Nathan’s mother, Diane, was in on it from the beginning. She holds the master key to the offshore shell in Nevis.
Finish them.
— A Friend.
I plugged the flash drive into my laptop. Files flooded the screen—spreadsheets, signed bank documents, forged wire transfers, and email threads dating back three years.
And there, right at the bottom of the screen, was an email thread titled: Project Replacement: Liquidating the Vance Estate.
Sender: Diane Whitmore. Recipient: Nathan Whitmore, Lauren Miller.
I leaned back in my leather chair, a cold, lethal laughter bubbling up in my chest.
Nathan hadn't just cheated on me. He, his mistress, and his mother had spent the last three years plotting a systematic financial execution of my family’s legacy while waiting for me to give birth.
